“ITY RED CROSS * {PREPARING FOR WAYIMUM AID
Chapter Holds 23d Annual Report Meeting; War Service Started.
- Preparations by the Indianapolis “Chapter of the American Red Cross for “maximum effort in war service” are nearing completion, it was re«ported yesterday at the 23d annual ‘meeting of the organization in the ‘Chamber of Commerce Building. The local chapter and others ‘throughout the nation have started production of clothing and hos‘pital swupplles and are preparing ‘to aid distressed peoples abroad or American military and naval forces.
Members Sought
Mrs. Agnes Cruse, chapter secre‘tary here, declared in her annual report that, among - other things, ‘the local Red Cross intended to prepare for “maximum service” by ‘a strong roll call drive. The call ywill be conducted from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving, and members ‘here hope to increase the present . membership of 32,919. Elected to three-year memberships on the board of directors were C. D. Alexander, Frederic M. Ayres, William H. Book, Louis J. Borinstein, Bowman Elder, Rabbi M. M. _ .Feuerlicht, Mrs. Wilbur Johnson, {Charles J. Lynn, Mrs. Hugh Mc- | Gibeny, Mrs. E. Kirk McKinney, «Dr. T. B. Noble Jr, and John F. White. © William J. Mooney Jr. was elected :to fill the unexpired term of his father who died during the year. i William J. Mooney Sr. had been a ‘member of the board. since ihe or‘ganization of the chapter.
Advantages Cited
William Fortune, chapter chair‘man, declared that the Red Cross is the only. organization chartered ‘by Congress as t national relief agency, and that it is the only naitional movement about which the {people can rally in preparation for iany national emergency. “Indianapolis ranks 10th among ‘the larger cities of the United States for its per capita enrollment of Red ‘Cross members,” he declared, “but many new members must be enrolled if the chapter is to meet its new responsibilities under the war crisis abroad.” A new record was established during the year for the number of per‘sons receiving first aid training in Marion County, according to the annual report. A total of 2769 persons were enrolled in Red Cross first aid classes and 1970 received Red Cross life saving certificates from the national organization.
Clothing Distributed
The Home Service department dealt with 953 cases in Marion ‘County during the past year, involving the welfare of 4765 persons. In addition to extending direct relief, more than 2300 articles of clothing were. distributed. Nationally, the Red Cross extended relief in 157 major disasters throughout the country, a record number of disasters during any 12month period. Although none of these disasters was comparable to the Ohio River flood, the Red Cross .spent $2,260,000 in disaster relief activities.

The Alcoholic Beverage Commission today was studying the testi-
mony of more than a score of witnesses who appeared at a wet-dry hearing before the Commission at Dunreith in Henry County yesterday. More than half the voting population of Dunreith protested the renewal of a beer and liquor permit for a tavern operated oy A. Vickery. | A delegation of more| than 30 Dunreith residents attended a similar hearing at the [Statehouse two weeks ago and the Commission at that time refused to| renew the
permit.

ducted an orderly tavern and claimed that under the law he is entitled to a permit. Dunreith residents testified that the town has no police protection and that patrons of the tavern “overrun the town with rowdyism.” Residents said all the patrons came from other towns and that no Dunreith residents patronized the place.
