For. Boston, Thence To Antarctic.

CHICAGO, ‘Oct. 25 (U. P).—A new tentative route of wide highways from Chicago to Boston was mapped today for the giant snow cruiser with which Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd will embark next month for another exploration of the Antartic. Leaving here tomorrow, the craft will take up almost complete roadbeds on its “shakedown” trip. The trip to Boston is to be made in eight legs. On the first leg the cruiser will travel - over U. S. Route 6 from South of Chicago to near Gary, Ind., for a test on the Indiana sand dunes. Continue on Route 6 to U. S. 31, south to U. S. Road 30 at Plymouth, Ind. and east on U. S. Route 30 to Ft. Wayne for an overnight stop. From there it will go over Route 30 - to Delphos, O., Route 3 on to Mansfield, O., for another overnight stop.

BOARD DEFERS DANCE INQUIRY

Waits Morrissey’s Return; Four Called in Quiz on Ticket Sales.

~The Safety Board's investigation to determine whether a Police Department ruling has been violated in the sale of tickets for a Fraternal Order of Police Dance was deferred yesterday, pending a report from Police Chief Michael F. Morrissey. Four Police Department members

the Board that no member of the department had solicited in connection with the event. Only associate members of the order who are civilians were selling tickets, they

said. ; Divide on Solicitation

Board members divided on whether police .or firemen should be permitted to solicit for fraternal or benevolent organizations. Donald S. Morris, Republican Board member, asserted that such solicitations were “undignified.” Frank B. Ross, Democrat member, said he saw no harm in soliciting for one event a

Robert Travis, attorney for the

ganization’s intention of evading the. Board’s rulirig that police may not solicit for any event unless given permission by the Board.

Four Who Appeared

Officers of the order who appeared before the Board were Patrolman Joseph T. Wilson, president; Det. Sergts. Morris Corbin, vice president; Jack Small, treasurer, and Clifford Beeker, secretary. Chief Morrissey will return this week from a convention of the International Association of Chiefs of Police at San Francisco.

Science:

New ‘Suspender’ Safety Belt Perfected for Army Fliers.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (U. PJ). —The Army Air Corps revealed to-

day that it has developed a new safety belt—similar to suspenders— which may reduce materially injuries in plane crashes. _ The new device, which straps over the shoulders and attaches to the regular safety belt which fastens down the legs of the fliers, is equipped with springs so that part of the shock in a crash is absorbed. The old “lap type” belt, a study of crash casualties showed, frequently resulted in broken legs and facial injuries caused by failure to prevent the top of the body from plunging into the instrument board. The new belt, which was developed after two years of experiments at Wright Field, Dayton, O., breaks the shock of the forward plunge but at such a slow rate that it will not snap the flier’s neck. It also serves to steady the airman’s position during difficult flying maneuvers, and while operating machine-guns

Television Charts Sun By Science Service PROVIDENCE, R. I, Oct. 25.— Television has come to the aid of astronomers studyihg the sun and may soon help communication engineers to forecast radio black-outs on trans-Atlantic transmissions, Dr. A. M. Skellett of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York City, told the National Academy of Sciences here recently at Brown University. Special television apparatus has been devised for use with telescopes

any time without waiting for a total solar eclipse. Only at times of total eclipses have astronomers previously been able to investigate the solar flares and prominences. What radio engineers hope is that by daily inspections of the solar activity in the corona they may be able to forecast better the disruptions in trans-Atlantic radio transmission. The new apparatus, tested successfully at the Cook Observatory at Wynnewood, Pa., is used in connection with a horizontal telescope which throws its image against a screen. A mirror on this screen, just the size of the image of the sun’s disk, reflects this useless glare down into a light trap. The desired image of the corona and its features passes on and is caught by a television camera which is sensitive only to the alternating current component that originates in the corona. ‘The direct-current component, found in the glaring disk, is rejected. The television apparatus amplifies the alternating-current component and reproduces from it an image of the corona. The televised image appears on the screen of a cathode ray tube.
