O., rose today as negotiators announced they had come to an agreement on the basic point which precipiated the quarrel that made idle 55,000 men. F. Dewey, that a U. A. W.-C. I. O.
representative would be permitted to examine, with co-operation by the management, any job believed to be operated beyond a worker’s endurance. “Should a satisfactory agreement not result,” said Herman L. ‘Oklahoma Pushes Murder
Prosecution Against Society Killer.
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 25 (U. P.).—The state continued today to prosecute its’ first-degree murder case against Roger Cunningham, 30, confessed slayer of his socially prominent wife. He offered to plead guilty in exchange for a life term but the State refused to compromise. County Attorney Lewis Morris brought from each succeeding State witness a little more detail of Cunningham’s background while he was a popular society man employed as Federal housing inspector, and particularly his feigned innocence after his beautiful young wife ‘had been reported missing by her mother. Mr. Morris sought thereby to build
up a case against Cunningham’s
announced plea of insanity and also to establish premeditation of murder which the State must prove to gain the death penalty. The trial courtroom was crowded with a preponderance of women spectators. The victim’s mother and stepfather, a wealthy Oklahoma City real estate operator, sat beside Prosecutor Morris. The defendant’s brother, Dr. Hugh Cunningham, Milwaukee physician, sat with him. Cunningham, who said he killed his wife because she nagged him about money, evaded the gaze of his victim’s mother, who, after a trying half hour on the stand, collapsed and was escorted, weeping, to a chair,

PRYOR, Okla. Oct. 25 (U. P.)— A 46-year-old farm woman rapidly dying of cancer lived in virtual suspended animation here today while medical science watched its most urgent experiment with refrigeration therapy.
If Mrs. Homer Stout, Locust Grove farm wife and mother of four school-age children, is alive Nov. 13, she will be living then and thenceforth on borrowed time—the gift of two pioneering medical scientists in strikingly different stratas of the profession.
Mrs. Stout has been suffering for years with what her . physicians diagnosed as incurable cancer of the stomach. She has been bedridden for months, in great pain, and last Sunday examining physicians forecast her death “within three weeks” at the latest.
In a small hospital here Which] bears his name, Dr. V. D. Herrington- was informed of her case and rushed through to completion an instrument of his own design. Monday he went to the Stout farm and conferred with Mrs. Stout and her husband. That night, “because she has everything to gain and nothing to lose,” she was brought to Herrington’s hospital. Dr. Herrington, progressive small-
from Philadelphia’s Temple University Hospital and a period of study under Dr. Temple Fay, noted research scientist who this year announced the amazing “freezing therapy” for cancer victims. Fay’s therapy, which has had several recent experiments in the East but in all cases upon patients with considerable life expectancy, employed cracked ice for body packs. The cold drove the patient’s body temperature down to as low as 86 degrees—previously considered killing temperature. Most physical functions ceased; only the heart continued beating and the lungs functioning. Fay’s experiments showed, he said, that such freezing over a period of a few days or a week completely halted the growth of cancer cells

In the case of Mrs. Stout, Dr. Herrington decided to further modernize Fay’s therapy. He took an ordinary freezing unit from an electrical refrigerator and connected to. the compressor coupling some 20 yards of thin rubber hose. ; This he wrapped around his patient’s body from neck to ankles. It quickly frosted over and drove her abnormally high temperature down to 88 degrees late Monday night. Today he pronounced the, experiment so far “perfect,” Mrs. Stout was in a coma, a sort of suspended animation, he said. She will continue in this condition until next Tuesday morning. Each day of her life beyond Tuesday, Dr. Herrington believes; will bear witness of the effectiveness of freeing as a potent treatment for cancer. “If this treatment js effective,” he said, “Mrs. Stout should have no trouble. - Outside of the cancer, she is in good health, We hope we can cure her. We’ll know Tuesday morn-

GUARD INCREASED
ON 2SHIPS AT N.Y.
NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (U. P).— Stronger police guards were placed today around the French liner Normandie and the Cunard White Star liner Queen Mary, the two largest, fastest and most luxurious ships in
the world, after the Navy Intelligence Department warned that one of them was to be sabotaged.
The liners are docked at adjacent
piers in the Hudson River, refugees from the war. A lieutenant commander of the Naval Intelligence Service visited both and notified the commanders of the plot. The commanders appealed for more police protection. So : A dozen high police officials went aboard both ships, conferring for an hour. Then, the force of 15 policemen guarding the two liners was increased to 30, two police launches were assigned to constant duty at the pier and detectives were ordered to search both ships periodically. plot, whether it called for scuttling, bombing or burning one of the liners, was not divulged.
