"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher
Two great: orchestras this weekend will honor the memory of Lawrence Gilman, late music critic of
ardent Wagnerian. Tonight Arturo Toscanini will include the “Good Friday Spell” from “Parsifal” as a memorial to Mr. Gilman in the NBC Symphony Orchestra’s broadcast program (9 p. m.,, NBC-Blue). And John Barbirolli has designated the final half of tomorrow’s New York Philhar-monic-Symphony Orchestra concert as his tribute. This will include three excerpts from Goetterdaemmerung”: :- Siegfried’s Rhine Journey; the Funeral March and the Immolation Scene. This last will have Helen Traubel, soprano, as soloist. Mr. Toscanini’s program also will contain the American premiere of “Die Nacht,” a suite by George Templeton Strong, 83-year-old American composer. Mr. Strong is a native New Yorker, who has lived in Europe most of his life. The suite, which was composed in ‘1914, was shown to Maestro Toscanini this summer by Ernest Ansermet, the Swiss conductor. Mr. Toscanini liked the music and learning the composer’s advanced age, determined to play it on one of his early broadcasts. And here it is.
the New York Herald-Tribune and|
"ON THE RADIO
announced the “Tannhaeuser” Overture, the “Good Friday” music and four excerpts from “Die Meistersinger” to precede intermission. : Incidentally, it will be recalled that Mr. Gilman was connected with Mr. Barbirolli and the Philharmon-ic-Symphony Society as co-worker as well as critic. From 1921 on he had been program annotator, and he also served as intermission commentator for the Sunday broadcasts from 1933 to 1935. Pitts Sanborn, music critic of the New York WorldTelegram, has succeeded Mr. Gil. man as author of the program notes, 2 2 8 The second program in the Radio City Music Hall's Rachmaninoft “festival” tomorrow brings the listener into more familiar territory. For the Russian composer will be represented by his Piano Concerto No. 2, in C Minor, with Henrietta Schumann. Assuredly one of the most popular works in the piano-and-orchestra literature, this concerto possesses historical importance as well as beauty and brilliance. For this was the work which lifted its composer from a five-year period of melancholy and inactivity following the cool reception of his first symphony. It was only after a series of psy-chological-hypnotic treatments by a Dr. Dahl that Mr. Rachmaninoff regained his musical powers. The C Minor Concerto, written in 1901, was the first result of this new lease on life. In the ensuing years, . Mr. Rachmaninoff apparently has been too busy and too successful as composer, pianist and conductor to fear any recurrence of the malady.
