Gelding Runs ‘About 2 Mile And %’ Faster Than Man o’ War's Time.
LEXINGTON, Ky. ot. £7 (U. P.)—High Fidelity, a 5-year-old gelding owned by the River Divide Farm, ran’ “about a mile a d 5%” at Keeneland Park yesterday, 42-5 seconds faster than Man O' War's world record, but the feat failed to gain official consideration. The inexact distance on the Keeneland oval was advanced as the reason for not recognizing High Fidelity’s 2:36 2-5 performance. Man O’ War's official record is 2:40 4-5, set at Belmont Park in 1920. The gelding was disqualified out of the race, although receiving credit for the time. Redbreast, who finished second ‘two lengths behind, was moved up to first position when the winner was placed out of the money because of a foul.

large - scores and en played a scoreless tie with Dartmouth. The Irish-Middie [rivalry is comparatively young as football series go. In the 12 games played, Notre Dame has won nine. They split the last six, however.
Stevenson Comes Back
About the only | change in the | Notre Dame lineup will be at the important left halfback post where Harry Stevenson Jr. is likely to start and see more action than Bob Saggau. After sharing in a pre-season publicity burst with Steve Sitko and Saggau, chiefly because his last name started with an “S,” Stevenson was in something of an eclipse
“funtil last week-end when he went
in to relieve Saggau when the latter was injured. Stevenson apparently knew an opportunity when he
saw one for he turned in a brilliant
performance against Southern Methodist. This was good enough to give him the call over Saggau, even though Bob’s injured leg has responded satisfactorily to treatment. Coach Elmer Layden also is reportedly ready to start Milt (Tarzan) Piepul, second team fullback, in place of Joe Thesing, who has been the No. 1 man in that position since 1937. Piepul made 73 yards in 12 trips, against S. M.-U., collecting 47 in one 66-yard touchdown drive In ‘the backfield for Navy will be Wood, quarter; Gebert, left half; Malcolm, right half, and Gray, full. Hoosiers to Stop Here The 36 members of Indiana's team selected to make the trip to Illinois are to spend the night in Indianapolis,- and are to entrain tomorrow morning for Champaign. With. two exceptions, the Indiana lineup will be the same as .it has been. With both Archie Harris and Russell. Higginbotham, left ends, on the injured list, Jim Ellenwood or Mike Dumke may get the nod. As a reward for his 80-yard. touchdown run against Wisconsin last week, Clee Maddox, who has had only two weeks practice because of an injured arm, may start at right halfback in place of Red Zimmer, It has been 40 years since an Indiana team has won a football game at Illinois, but then the Hoosiers hadn't won a game at Wisconsin for 29 years until they turned the trick last Saturday. You can count on it though that both Bo McMillin and Bob Zuppke have more plans than an architect for this game. Sophs Plentiful There probably will be six sophomares in the Illinois lineup: Joe Turek, guard; Paul Milosevich, end; Nate Johnson, tackle; Jimmy Smith and Laverne Astroth, halfbacks, and Bob Falkenstein, fullback. There isn’t much difference in the weights of the two squads. The Illinois line averages 201 pounds per man and the backfield 169 for a team average of 189%. The average of the Hoosiers is 188 pounds, with 1962 in the line and 1733, in the backfield. Franklin will be seeking its initial victory of the season when it plays host to Central Normal. The Grizzlie squad has been below par because of injuries, and Earl Wert, end; Joh Shanahan and Don Rutan, halfbacks, and Gene Starr,
The personal rivarly between those busy backfield mites, Franklin Leavitt of Indiana State and Jimmy Phend of Ball State, is expected to enliven the SycamoreCardinal meeting. Wabash and Hanover will revive a rivalry that dates back to 1886. The Little Giants won the first 10 meetings and Hanover took the last four. In the Wabash backfield will be Martin Quinn, quarter; George Wilson, left half; Gray, right half, and David Crockett, full. Several hundred students and the Butler band will make- the trip to Greencastle for the DePauw game. Since the renewal of athletic relationship between the two schools in 1937, Butler teams have scored two 12-0 victories over the Old Gold.
Brock Back in Shape
Most encouraging note at Purdue is the return to form of Lou Brock, the triple threater who has been handicapped thus far by an ankle injury sustained in a preseason softball game.’ Against the Gophers last week, this Boilermaker veteran averaged better than five yards a crack on running plays, returned three punts for a total of 40 yards and got off five kicks.that averaged better than 35 yards. However, the “Three Bees” won't be intact, for Jack Brown suffered a recurrence of his side injury late in the Min« nesota battle. = John Galvin, 165+ pound sophomore, probably wjll re~ place :- him at. the left - halfback post, If you're going to Lafayette tomorrow, notice Stanley P. McRae, the big Michigan State end who does most of the team’s punting. Coach Charley Bachman proclaims that he is “the longest kicker in America, bar none,” which is quite a statement when you stop to think about it.

Armstrong Risks His Title Tonight||
SEATTLE, Oct. 20 (U. P.).—Henry Armstrong, world’s welterweight champion, ruled an odds-on favorite over Richie Fontaine of Hollywood in their 15-round title bout here tonight. Absence of betting reflected general belief the Los Angeles Negro would have little trouble disposing of his rival, who scored a decision over the champion in 1936. JArmstrong was expected to hold a four-pound weight advantage when they weighed in the champion around 141 and Fontaine at 137 pounds.
