Convene in St. Louis Next "Week; Gospel to ‘Be Theme.

» ST. LOUIS, Oct. 20 (U. P). — ~ World-wide extension of the principles of Christian Gospel is the only sure foundation for permanent peace. That will be the theme of the 130th annual meeting of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, convening at the Pilgrim ‘Congregational Church tere “Oct. 24-26. Americans fresh from war zones will bring messages to the meeting, held in conjunction with the Midwest regional conference of Congregational and Christian churches of 19 states. With the general topic of “World Issues and World Christians” the sessions will open officially Oct. 24 with keynote addresses by. three nationally known churchmen. Topics Listed

Oscar D. Maurer, D. D.,.New Haven, Conn., moderator of the General Council of Congregational and Christian Churches in the United States, will speak on “The Church in the World”; Fred F. Goodsell, D. D., Boston, exccutive vice president of the American board, will talk on “The Christian Community Abroad,” and William i: F. Frazier, D. D., New York, presi- , dent of the board of home mission-| aries Qf the Congregational and Christian Churches, will address the meeting on “The Christian Coms= munity in America.” , §f A Christian World Fellowship - banquet that evening will be folJowed by a mass meeting designed for laymen, with an address by Dr. Edward H. Hume, New York, director of the Christian Medical Council for Overseas Work, on “Golden Milestones.”

Missionaries to Speak

Sessions Oct. 25 will feature reports on conditions in China, Japan, India, Africa and Turkey by five men and women home from fields abroad, a miniature Madras headlining foreign pastors and the annual sermon in the evening. ‘Regional conferences will occupy morning sessions Oct. 26, and in the afternoon the Council for Social Action will present a program designed for youth. Highlights of the afternoon program will be the commissioning for life service under the American] board of two young missionaries booked for China service, the Rev. and Mrs. E. Walter Smith of Memphis; Tenn., and Tampa, Fla.

SURGEON IS AWARDED $100,000 FOR FINGERS

"NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (U. P.).— A Supreme Court j urgoday awarded Dr. Richard J. GTonnell Jr, a surgeon, $100,000 for the loss of three fingers burned by an X-ray machine, The verdict was against the Westinghouse ' X-ray Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric & maufacturing Co., manufacturers of the machine which the doctor asserted had been improperly assembled. Dr. O'Connell used the machine in April, 1937, at Bellevue Hospital to which it had been donated. The surgeon alleged it had been assembled in such a manner that rays escaped and burned two fingers on his right hand and one on his left so badly they had to be amputated.

EXPERT TO DISCUSS VARIETIES OF CORN

Times Special GREENCASTLE, Ind. Oct. 20. — George Enfield, extension agronomist at Purdue University, will discuss different varieties of corn at two meetings here Tuesday. Varieties included in the discussion will be the open pollinated corn, Reid’s Yellow Dent and 14 different , hybrids.
