Pitt Eleven Has Its Fun --And Wins
What's More, Crowds Are Getting Bang Out of Watching Panthers.
By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Service Sports Editor - PITTSBURGH, Oct. 18.—What about these “de-emphasized” Pittsburgh Panthers, the surprise team of the year? They weren't supposed to have much, including anyone out of the ordinary in the way of a head coach. So what happens this fall? Nothing outside of a Pitt team you Youlan's recognize shellacking n in the opener in pam decisively defeating West Virginia, and then out-passing and out-fighting a highly regarded Duke array to prevail by the margin of a missed point after touchdown. They're Deadly in the Air Relaxation of tension, knowledge that their passing game must really be a ground-gaining part of the attack with consequently more attention paid to completion of forwards rather than form in throwing, and alert although not as rugged defensive play, all have played a part in the fine showing of the Pitts. - ‘Perhaps the Gold and Blue is not as well drilled as it was under Dr. John Bain Sutherland, when it ponies to running. But in upsetting favored Washington and Duke, the Panthers were more formidable in the air than any Jock Sutherland-coached aggregagion in memory. Pittsburgh passers . . . the most siccurate of whom is Narick . . are given a little more time to
Ww. : Scoring Passes Identical
Receivers . . . the sharpest of whom is the brilliant Dick Cassiano s . . are drilled in faking defensive ‘men out of position. The scoring passes against Duke were identical . . . Narick to Casslano, the Albany Arrow making a remarkable catch on the one that tied the score and made victory possible. » Pitt passers no longer are supposed to pass merely to push back the secondary. They can pass from any zone. They pass to gain ground » . . to score. In Pitt's more limited practice sessions and on the actual firing line, the passing game is easier than the ruthless power attacks of the past . . . easier to perfect. . . easier on the athletes.
Narick Comes Through
In three games, Pitt twice has scored on first down heaves when within the enemy 10. The Panthers completed 12 out of 18 passes in repelling Washington 27-6. Before the Washington show, Charles W. Bowser, Pitt ’22, who stepped up when Dr. Sutherland resigned in what he considered an impossible situation, seldom had more than three halfbacks with whom to practice, a far cry from the day of three deep. Narick always has been a good passer, but because he is slow had little opportunity in two campaigns. Now with Curly Stebbins gone, and Pitt's speedy reverses gone with him, Narick has to be used, and the Benwood, W. Va. lad has passed successfully on 12 of 16 attempts, three times for touchdowns.
Appeals to Crowd
The 1939 team appeals more to spectators than it does to students of football who see so much of the Sutherland perfection in the running game apparently missing. Mistakes and fumbles and passers waiting top long to get the ball away helped defeat Duke. But this team of Pitt opportunists made the most of its breaks. Pitt coaches don’t expect to go through undefeated. They realize that compared to other Panther teams this one shouldn’t rate too highly. Théy will not be surprised if the Panthers fall afoul of a terific lacing one of these afternoons. ut meanwhile the players are having a lot of fun, outsmarting the opposition and heckling better teams such as Duke to defeat. Maybe that’s the secret. The Panthers seem to be having tore fun.
Bender to Manage | Connie’s Farm Club I FHILADELPHIA, Oct. 18 (U. P.).
,~—Charles Albert (Chief) Bender, famed oldtime Indian pitcher for
the Philadelphia Athletics, today was designated manager of the Wilmington, Del., baseball club in the -Interstate League, Connie Mack’s first venture in the farm - pystem. Determined to bolster his struggling A’s against the huge farm systems of the Yankees and Cardinals, Mack acquired the Interstate franchise. Mayor Walter W. Bacon of Wilmington disclosed that a group of businessmen, with whom Du Pont interests reportedly were affiliated, planned to erect a new $30,000 park for the team.

Challedon Rated Best for Special
(Continued From Page 16)
they may not be as fast is not taken into consideration. Challedon’s chief opposition at Pimlico (a track he is very proud
from Kayak II. True, the South American ace was beatefl; and badly, by Challedon in the Narragansett Special, but it isn’t likely that Kayak the Twice was at his best for ‘that race. It was his first appearance in the East after a long trip from California, and he wasn’t thoroughly settled. Cravat looked good on the Coast, especially in winning the $25,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap. But that fancily named stake was at a mile and a half, and that is the distance Cravat likes. Yet, according to Alfred Vanderbilt, head of Pimlico and sponsor of the Special, Cravat’s owner, Townsend Martin, said the mile and 3-16ths route suited him perfectly. Isolater will be the outsider in the race, both in the betting and breeding, He was foaled in Ireland on the farm of Boyd-Rochefort, England’s best known trainer and the ‘man who handles William Woodward’s foreign stable. Isolater was supposed to have confined his racing to English tracks, but when the English placed a tremendous tax on Irish horses, Owner: Woodward brought him to this countty.
