BUILDING RATE UP 3 PER GENT
Private Grants Offset Dip In Public Contracts For September.
NEW YORX, Oct. 17 (U. P.).— Construction contract awards in 37 eastern states in September amounted to $323,227,000, an increase of 3 per cent over August, -and-T7 per cent over September, 1938, the F. W. Dodge Corp. reported today. For the first nine months of this year contract volume amounted to $2,634,802,000, highest for any corresponding period since 1930, and 23 per cent greater than in the first
nine months of last year. Increased private construction
Amore than offset a decline in con-
tracts for publicly-owned prajects
i, | during September. the corporation
said. The gain in private contracts from $153,869,000 in August to $179,011,000 for September principally reflected advances in vilume of commercial and factory building. “The. trends in evidence during the past several months, of continuing private construction at a relatively" high rate and moderately declining public work, persisted during the first month which has elapsed since the outbreak of war in Europe,” the corporation declared. “On the basis of this year’s record to date, the industry’s expectation that 1939 would be the sixth consecutive year of construction volume increase is being realized, ” the company added.
