Minton Also Wants Trade But Denies Aim Is U.S. Aid to Britain.
Times Special WASHINGTON, Oct. 13.—So far as the record is concerned, Senators Frederick VanNuys and Sherman Minton, Democrats of Indiana, are split today on their reasons for supporting the Administration Neutrailty law changes. Seantor VanNuys repeatedly has asserted that he thinks the present statute helps Herr Hitler and he wants it revamped to help Great Britain and France “wipe Hitlerism off the face of the earth.” Because of this forthright statement of his stand, Senator VanNuys has been praised publicly by such outstanding opponents of change as Senators Robert M. Mass.), the Indianian denied that he wants the law changed to favor the Allies. “The Senator from Indiana is one of the most brilliant members of this body,” Senator Lodge asserted on the Senate floor. “I may say that he never rises to speak without stimulating and enlightening me. “I am sure he is not being entirely serious when he pretends that he does not realize that repeal of the embargo will help Great Britdin «nd France, because the whole reason for repealing it is to help the side that it is supposed to be advantageous to us to help.” Senator Lodge was being questioned by Senator Minton while he (Senator Lodge) was talking against the Administration changes.
