Advance Imports Made Before the War. . . .
WAR CAUSES BOOST
British Embargo and Crippling of Cutting Work Abroad Are Among Reasons.
‘SMALL STONES RISE 35%
Shortage Feared—Industrial Types Advance Even More as Demand Increases, -
War developments have brought a sharp increase in diamond prices and a shortage of the smaller stones is threatened, trade authcrities here reported yesterday. ‘A rise of 35 per cent was reported for diamonds ranging in size to one-quarter carat, with a 20 per cent advance made on larger gems. Crippling of cutting operations through mobilization in Holland and Belgium, the British embargo against diamond exports and an increased speculative and investment demand have brought about the rise, The United States is the largest single purchaser of diamonds and the gem trade here is watching developments very closely.: Despite the rise, however, it was indicated in some quarters that there is a substantial supply of rough stones available in this country, imports having risen sharply in the weeks immediately preceding the outbreak of the war.
Sees Further Heavy Buying
Pointing out that Great Britain was not permitting diamond exports, Mr. Van Itallie said Belgium ‘has also prohibited such exports. Shipments have been received from Holland, but prices are up sharply. Where shipments have -been made .on other than‘Dutch ships, high war risk insurance costs have been a factor. Belgium and Holland have been the chief diamond-cufting centers of the world. Reports here ‘indi-

Fear Bales to Germany
Great Britain, home of the Diamond Syndicate which controls the world’s supplies through the stones it turns over to the Diamond Trading Company, has banned exports in the fear that the stones would fall into ‘German hands for war machinery production. Estimates were made in one quarter yesterday that the Diamond Syndicate in London has approximately £2,000,000 worth of rough diamonds on hand. These normally are sold to the cutters, who in turn sell the stones to importers for distribution to retailers. The rise in small stones, or “meilie” as they are called in the trade, has been most pronounced, due in part to the fact that Germany did much of the cutting of these stones and these supplies have now been cut off. There are only about 400 diamond cutters in the United States, and the supply of rough stones here would take about: six months to clear to distributing channels, it was said. ¢ wages paid to the diamond cutters: abroad for cutting the small stones have been low. It was: said that ‘any attempt: to cut
1the small stones here at the Amer
ican ‘wage scales would result in sharp increases in costs, with the labor charge larger than the cost of the small rough diamond. Developments abroad will not affect the current campaign to promote sales in the United States undertaken by the DeBeers Consolidated Mines through N. W. Ayer & Son, Inc, it has.already been announced.
