"The Women’ Wins Hit-of-
(and No Men) Month Honor
A picture with not a man in the cast, and yet strangely enough all about men, took top honors in the Scripps-Howard Picture Hit of theq
Month for September.
“The Women,” M-G-M picture directed by George Cukor and fashioned from the Broadway stage play of the same name, was selected by
Scripps-Howard movie critics from Glory,” Golden Boy,” and “Dust Be My Destiny.” Following are comments from some of the Scripps-Howard movie reviewers:
Kaspar Monahan of the Pitts- , burgh Press:
“MGM's ‘The Women’—and audiences, filling our local deluxer with burbling chortles and howls of glee —are casting my vote for me. Even if I didn’t care so much for this stormy screen version of Clare Boothe’s malicious expose of her sex, +I still couldn’t honestly. ignore the vociferous approval registered by the folks who pay the freight. On the artistic side, maybe ‘Old Maid’ should get the nod but ‘The Women’ is an A-1 audience picture. The all-women cast is a lulu, with extra laurels for Rosalind Russell— a veritable revelation as a comedienne—and Joan Crawford who at last finds a role in which she can take down her hair and go to > town.” ‘Limp With Laughter’
Jack Gordon, of the Fort Worth Press, remarks: “Although the good ladies stood up valiantly under every assault of claw and tongue, this movie had me hanging on the ropes, limp with laughter.” : From Houston, Paul Hochuli of the Press says:
“Although about the ladies, ‘The Women’ is an education for mere man. He learns how women wet the lowdown during the updo and also that marriages aren’t made in heaven because the ladies are the architects and the type in ‘The Women’ doesn’t exactly live in that: place. My congratulations to Rosalind Russell for the finest work she’s done and to Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer for getting back into the spot they once held down.” Jimmy Briggs reports from the . Rocky Mountain News in Denver: “No one will have a complaint to make on ‘The Women’—not even Clare Booth herself, I venture to say—with shapely Paulette Goddard grabbing the eye appeal in a bit part. Rosalind Russell does a nice bit of picture stealing, which is
s
among such pictures as “The Real
petition in the persons of Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford.” - “Movie fare of a different touch. A film highlighted with fresh, brisk comedy and splendid acting,” writes H. A. Michael, reviewer of the El Paso Herald-Post.
William S. Cunningham, of the Columbus Citizen, comments: “‘The Women’ . . . is my picture hit of the month. It is smart and saucy adult entertainment which makes an audience laugh at a time when the world needs laughs. Burlesque, satire or realism, it does contain a sugar-coated pill of sociological philosophy.” . Claude La Belle of the San Francisco News had to split his vote between “The Women” and “Real ‘Glory.” He writes: “‘Real Glory’ has one of the most adept casts to be. seen in pictures, with honors evenly divided for fine acting. So, too, with ‘The Women.’ The all-feminine cast was surely fitted for-tHe many roles, with two or three especially good performances. It is pictures like this pair that makes it tough to pick that ‘ten best’ at the end of the year.”

Selznick, producer of “Intermezzo, A Love Story,” starring Ingrid Bergman, the Swedish star, has been asked to send a print of the film to King Gustaf of Sweden.
