STOCKS UNEVEN ON REPORTS OF NEW PEACE TRY

Grain ‘Prices Also Waver; U. S. Bonds Weaken; Cotton Slips.

2

By UNITED PRESS Rapid shifts in the European political scene confused Wall Street today and stock prices developed irregular tendencies after an early upsurge extending to $2. The initial upswing, led by war babies, reflected the “no peace” statement by Prime Minister Chamberlain yesterday. Shortly after the opening, however, reports from abroad indicated a possibility that one of the neutral countries might initiate a, peace conference and the stock list reacted. Domestic business news largely was favorable. Steel leaders: were down more than $1 from the early highs with Bethlehem showing a small gain and U. S. Steel a minor loss. Chrysler was down almost $1. Coppers and oils eased. Douglas Aircraft lost almost all on an early $2 gain to $78.75. Rails turned irregular and utilities were little changed. Chemical shares held part of an early rise ranging to more than a point. Wheat fluctuated nervously in a harrow range on the Chicago Board of Trade. At the end of the first hour wheat was off % to 3 cent, corn was off 14 to 3s cent, and oats were % to 3% cent lower. . Trading opened at slightly higher levels than- Wednesday's close, -but selling pressure sent the market lower. Trade became fairly evenly divided. European news continued to give |g an uncertain tone to the trading. U. S. Government and Foreign Bonds weakened on increasing tension on the European front, but domestic issues disregarded war developments and held about steady in quiet trading. Losses in tHe Federal list extended to 18-32 point. Cotton futures slipped back to around previous closing levels after early gains ranging to 7 points. Securities firmed in all directions on the London Stock Exchange in reflection of approval in financial quarters of Prime Minister Chamberlain’s reply to Hitler's peace bid.
