made two trips to see Herr Hitler in Germany to settle the Czechoslovak issue.
The Fuehrer delivered a scathing attack on Eduard :Benes, President of - Czechoslovakia, - recalled PresiSens ‘Woodrow Wilson’s principle of e self-determination of peoples, bitterly charged. the Czechs with persecuting German minorities and reiterated - ‘Germany’s peaceful intentions.: He: thanked Premier Chamberlain,’ castigated Bolshevism, described his proposed ethnic delimitation of the new Czechoslovak frontiers and presented President Benes an ultimatum. “I have selected a frontier that is fair 10. The patt. ‘of Munich had been signed, the Czechs ‘had capitulated under Anglo-French pressure, Herr Hitler had “avowed that the Sudetenland Was his “last territorial claim” in Effrope; Mr. Chamberlain had told the British people they had achieved: “peace with hohor” and that he had secured “peace for our time.” “The. Nazi. . “pogrom” against the ‘German Jews in‘ November had shocked the world. , Herr Hitler. told of the solidarity of the Reich, deplored the loss of her colonies and stressed the need for German <lebensraum” (living space.) He aftacked Britain, charging her with the intent to destroy Germany, and repeated that Germany had no “aim of conflict” with either Britain or France. He ridi- " culed the Jews and chided the democracies for- not: aiding and re-|. ceiving them. Of the Rome-Berlin axis he said: “On this solidaripy is founded the salvation of ‘Europe from its threatened destruction by bolshevism. »
APRIL 28, 1939 Czechoslovakia had been ‘broken up, Mr. Chamberlain had accused Herr Hitler of breach of faith; the era of appeasement was over. Germany had taken Meme] and -the Czeeh provinces, Italy had invaded Albania, Gen. Franco's. Spain. had Joined the anti-Comintern pact and Germany had concluded an important trade agreement with Rumania. The British announced that they and France would defend Poland. President Roosevelt, two weeks before, had sent his appeal for peace to. Herr Hitler and Sig. Mussolini.
Answering the American President, Herr Hitler denied that Ger-

others and had only “restored the justice ‘which was violated 20 years ago.” He said the Munich agreement was not “final” because there! "were other problems unsolved. He said that the British Empire was no-.greater, historically, than the German Empire and no more deserving of far-flung colonies and suggested that Britain, rather than continue criticizing Germany for broken promises, should try to cooperate. He dismissed Mr. Roosevelt’s appeal.’ He revealed his demands on Poland and remarked: “Danzig is a German city and wishes to belong to Germany.”
SEPT. 1, 1939
The Poles had rejected Herr Hitler's demands for Danzig and the Corridor, the Anglo-Soviet negotiations had reached a stalemate, Germany and Russia had concluded first a“ trade agreement and then a non-aggression pact and the Germans were marching into Poland! Britain and France were fo declare war on Germany in two days. ° The Fuehrer repeated Germany's case for claims to Danzig and the

Warsaw Air Defe Defense: Chief Describes Assembling of ‘Junker’ Planes.
\
PARIS, Oct. 6 (U.: P.).=Col. :Nowak, chief of the Warsaw air defense, told today how he and nine other Polish fliers, on orders of the Warsaw defense commander, Gen. Rummel, escaped ‘from the Polish capital aboard ‘six antiquated planes just two days before Warsaw capitulated to the ‘German Army, ° “With all our aircraft destroyed and our munitions running low" it became increasingly clear that War-
saw’s capitulation was approaching,” Col. Nowak said. “Gen.. Rummel wished to save several Polish fliers; myself Included. “We searched all the half-Kurned hangars, aviation schools and aeronautical clubs for spare In six days we rebuilt seven: ‘makeshift planes—three of them were single~ seated sports planes, anQther an old reconnaissance plane which I was to use. The latter was an old PZL-11 type which had been dismantled into a thausand parts three years ago for demonstration purposes at a fly=ing school. “When the machines were completed we had a look around for an airfield. The Okecie military airfield was occupied by the Germans and fighting raged at the small Mokotow civilian airfield. “We decided to leave on the night of Sept. 26. Our infantry was ordered to clear part of Mokotow Field, where they forced the enemy back in a bayonet and hand grenade charge. “I and 10 other fliers rolled the machines from their hangars, started the motors and ‘warmed. up while the sound of the motors was drowned “by ‘machine gun and artillery fire. “At 2 a. m. we cleared the German lines: where enemy gunfire brought down one of our planes. “We circled Warsaw at 9000 feet and seeing the burning . capital for the last time, we headed southwards towards Hungary. “I am now enlisted in the Polish Army on the Western Front.” ’ Col. Nowak estimated that 30,000 civilians had been killed at Warsaw, which was shelled and bombed from the air for 20 days.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. Oct. 6 (U. P.). =Peagy Kaiser, -2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Kaiser of Evansville, was killed yesterday. when an ice truck backed into her as she played near her home. Albert Scheneman, driver of the j truck, told police he did not see the child.
Corridor, detailed ‘the atrocities he alleged had been committed against the Germans in Poland, averred that Germany. had no interests in western Poland and announced that the invasion of Poland had begun.
The Fuehrer praised the SovietGerman pact, called upon the people to'prepare for the sacrifices of war and promised that the Nazi air activities in Poland would be confined to military spheres. He designated Field Marshal Hermann Goering and Deputy Party Leader Hudolt Hess as his successors, ang “I again put On the. uniform which once had been most sacred and dear to me. I will take 5 ott oy after vietory.” . ;
