nioe since 1937 at $94.37%, up $1621, eased to $93.75. Utilities dippéd to slight losses and rails reduced early gains. Experts said the early rise had been too fast. Hitler speech was stil lan influence although many traders had inter-

. preted it as indication the war would |C

continue. Grain Rise Checked

Selling by professionals checke® an upward surge in wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade todas after the market opened 2 cents higher on the warlike tone of Hitler’s speech. At the end of the first hour wheat was up 1%-1% cents, about a cent below the extreme highs. Corn was up 1%-1% cents, and oats were 8-3 cent higher. Trading was active at the start as traders interpreted - Hitler's speech to mean a long war, but when the selling faction began action the trading hecame more mixed and quiet. Listed bonds followed the accepted war pattern after traders and investors had absorbed Hitler’s speech. Early gains in the speculative railroad group, ranging to about 2 points, were scaled somewhat in second hour profit-taking, however. Both United States and foreign goverment issues held narrowly around the early lows.

Pound Sterling Dips

Early steadiness in the foreign exchange market gave way to moderate weakness. The pound Sterling led the downturn, dropping from ah |I early price of $4.041 to $4.02%,

where it was off 1% cents on the jut t P&P

day. Renewed speculative demand for commodities reflected diminishing hope for an early European peace. Major staples scored wide gains. Rubber, sugar and wheat—primary “war staples” —led the advance. Crude rubber swung up as much as

65 points. Both world and domestic |Loew’s

sugar options gained as much.as 7

Reactionary tendencies developed in closing dealings on the London Stock Exchange but the decline was attributed to technical factors rather than to the tone or text of the Hitler Reichstag address. Prior to Hitler's speech prices moved rather narrowly in very quiet trade. Week-end profit-taking was in evidence and scaled quotations moderately in many sections.
