i uled to operate at 87.5 per cent of ? capacity this week, the highest level since May. 24, 1937, and 3.7 points or 44 per cent over the preceding week’s rate, the American Iron & Steel Institute reported today. ~ Steel ingot production in the final quarter of this. year probably will reach the highest level for any “"y,|quarter on record, the magazine ’s | Steel said today. “The unprecedented wave of steel buying the past four weeks has passed the crest,” the publication stated, ‘and pressure for delivery leaves mills the problem of providing additional iron and steel provs |ducing facilities necessary to re- , | lieve heavy backlogs. “More steelmaking capacity is > |being added as rapidly as possible. but in some cases is being retarded by shortage of blast furnace capacity. The latter, in turn, is handicapped by lack of adequate coke supplies.” i The authority reported steel operations last week up 4% points to 84 per cent as compared with 47 per cent a year .ago. DAILY MILK SALES UP-5.65 PER CENT
Times Special NEW YORK, Oct. 2.—Daily Average sales of fluid milk during August increased 5:65 per cent: over the same period a year ago, the Milk Industry Foundation announced today. In August daily average sales totaled 6,626,672 quarts compared with 6,272,370 quarts in August 1938. Milk company payrells in August showed a decrease of 2.12 per cent and employment an increase of .21 of 1 per cent compared with August, 1938.

The body designs of all the new Ford -products, including the Mer|cury and Lincoln-Zephyr, have been changed to effect a longer, stream-

Stress Riding Comfort
The Ford Motor Co.. announcements said engineers had stressed more riding comfort in all models with special ventilating equipment installed in all cars. Engineers said new-type sealbeam headlights: will add “50 per cent more driving vision” at night and that the ride stabilizer will contribute to easier steering. More room has been provided in the front seats of all models by elimination of the lever gear shifts| and installation of the finger-rip devices under a two-spoke steering wheel. The 1940 Mercury features devices designed to minimize motor noise with - rubber-cushioned mountings and new body insulations.

NEW FINANCING TO DIP SLIGHTLY IN WEEK
NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (U. P.).—The Daily Bond Buyer today reported new municipal and state financing scheduled for this week amounts to $13,436,449. Compared with $13,505,285 last week. The authority said the weekly average of new offerings for the year to date now stands at $24,632,533. The Northwestern Electric Co. has applied for exemption from requirements of the Holding Company Act in connection with issuance and sale of $6,700,000 in first mortgage 4 per cent bonds and $2,800,000 in 412° per cent debentures, due in 1959, to be sold privately. In the statement filed with the A Securities & Exchange Commission. Northwestern stated that the bonds are to be sold to a group of insurance companies. Information on the prospective sale of the debentures will be filed later.
