gium unprepared again. There are 750,000 men under arms now and a strong series of fortifications, especially in the Valley of the Meuse where the Germans marched 25 years ago. There, forts extend ¢ver 155 square miles in some places; tank fences and traps and mines bar the way of any mechanized forces and all roads and bridges are heavily mined. More technicians will be called to the colors in the next two weeks, bringing the armed strength to 800,000 anc there are 200,000 more men available for front line duty and 300,000 between the ages of 35 and 48 able to do secondary work such ‘as maintaining supply lines and guarding bridges and railroads. -The situation is far different than 1914, when Belgium had less than
Defenses, especially in the large semi-circular area from Namur in the south to Antwerp and along the
Meuse to the Albert Canal are impressive. All valleys leading into the Meuse are protected by series of shelters cut deep into-the rocks. Frontier forces are equipped with machine guns, anti-tank guns and light artillery at positions permitting a sweeping cross-fire. Crack chasseurs with at least three years’ military service guard the borders. Mobilization already is costing Belgium $51,000 a day.

100,000 men mobilized, the Meuse was the first line of defense and the 12 forts surrounding Liege were
and at Eben Emael, near Maastricht, beside the tip of Holland extending along the eastern border of Belgium. A series of 10 heavily constructed forts, all connected by deep tunnels and galleries, extend from Liege 35 miles southwest to Namur along the Meuse. These forts have big guns. Another section of Belgium’s iron| and concrete necklace runs from | Liege 20 miles northeast to Eben Emael. The Belgian High Command knows that Limberg, the. Holland province extending southward, would be difficult for Holland to defend, since it is only three or four miles wide in ‘some parts, therefore Belgium has built especially strong defenses between Liege and Antwerp to form the backbone of the whole system. Rows of casements, redoubts and galleries extend from Eben Emael fortress to the Albert Canal, which is 25 to 60 yards wide and 18 to 20 feet deep and passes in places through banks 60 to 80 feet high, making crossings difficult.

chine guns, ‘ Trenches, mostly circular ones heavily sand-bagged, have been dug around factories and strategical centers. Many are c¢quipped with anti-aircraft guns. The war preparations have badly disrupted Belgium’s economic life. There is already a shortage of soap, fats, sugar salt and spices. Prices are ‘increasing in spite of anti-profiteering measures.
