LLOYD GEORGE SCORES POLES!
Sorry Figure; Justifies ; - Some of Soviet Motives. :
LONDON, Sept. 28 (U. P.).—Correspondence of David Lloyd George; World War Prime Minister of Great - Britain, denouncing the’ present Polish Government and justifying some of the reasons for the Russiant
invasion of Poland, was made public today. Mr. Lloyd George had written a newspaper article expressing similar views, to which Count Edward Raczynski, Polish ambassador ‘to Britain, had taken exception. In reply to Count Raczynski, Mr. Lloyd George wrote in part:
Draws Distinction
“It is essential to draw a distinetion between the action of the Soviet Republic and that of the Nazis. The| latter is seeking to annex territories’; essentially Polish. “On ' the other hand, Russian armies marched into territories which were not Polish and which were forcibly annexed by Poland after the great war despite fierce. protests and armed resistance by the inhabitants. Inhabitants of the Polish Ukraine are of the same race and speak .the same language as their neighbors in the Ukraine Republic of the Soviet Union... White Russia was annexed by Poland as the result of a victorious « war against Russia. . .
‘It Would Suit Hitler’
“It would be an act of criminal folly 90 place the Russian advance in the same category as that of Germans, although it would suit Hitler's designs to do so.” Mr. Lloyd George stated his contempt for Polish Gpvernment officials “who fled to safety, leaving its soldiers to die in defense of Warsaw.”

most of the. ‘country’s -sapatoria. Through the years knowledge of the disease and its treatment has:in“creased greatly. Education has warned - the public to be. alert for early symptoms. Facilities for patients’ core have expanded .and :many. other * steps have been taken’ to make the patient’s future outlook imnreasurably brighter. : Yet the missing link, “in most places, has gone unforged. Sunnyside, not so long ago, offered a typical: instance... Bed patients ‘had, a meager, library ! of “popular” fiction at’ their: ‘disposal. Radio programs, coming. through ~ head phones on each bed were chosen at the discretion of whoever
“When the patient was able to be up for part of the day, occupational ‘ therapy was his only creative activ“ity. Handicraft, needlework, knitting and similar work took thoughts away from illness, but offered little else. Money Lacking
Today the educational program, under way since the first of the year, is supplying 128 of the 240 ‘patients with instruction. Under R. J. Dear(born, principal of the rehabilitation department, and Dr. Jennings, instruction is being given in the common . branches of learning, high school and commercial subjects and others of a specialized nature. All this is being done in the face of discouraging deficiencies. There is a lack of funds. Three of the six WPA teachers assigned to Sunnyside ‘in recent weeks have been recalled. There is a severe shortage of educational and vocational literature and of current books, fiction and otherwise.

In spite of this, however, something is being done to prepare Bo tients for altered but still ful lives .after their release. Many. of them will be forced to restricted activity, and so must prepare themselves for different occupations. Others will be able to fill better jobs through Supplementing deficient learning.
Has Immediate Benefit
.In addition, the education -program is of immediate benefit. Freedom from worry is vital in the long; quiet hours necessary to a tuberculosis cure. And constructive inter‘ests help to turn the mind from current symptoms and future dread. It is a well established fact that tuberculosis doe: not dull the mind. So the long convalescence is a fruitful time for mental progress,
hand. Sunnyside’s educational program is by no means standing still, in spite of its handicaps. At present 41 patients are studying elementary ‘English; 30 study spelling; nine, reading; five, geography; five, writing, and one, history In the high school divisions there are four algebra students and the same number taking Latin. Two patients are taking work in history, 10 in English and eight in art.
Shorthand Popular
The shorthand course among commercial subjects has 27 enrolled, while 22 are studying bookkeeping and six typing. Besides these, Mr. Dearborn and the other teachers are filling individual needs. One man is brushing up on his Greek grammar. Another is studying metallurgy and a third, a former coffee salesman, is learning all he can about his subject. An.other has requested books on child ‘psychology; a young woman wants instruction in color and design. For the more general instruction .courses, the sanatorium’s own “padio Hookup” brings lessons to the bed patients via head phones, while ‘the more active receive private lessons. For the special. work, Mr. Dearborn combs the city for literature. Patients are depending upon self-instruction until such time as more teachers are available.
1. U. Gives Tests
‘In addition, patients are given personal interviews and help in vocational guidance, Indiana University has. offered what assistance it can give in aptitude tests, to develop even better latent talents toward future needs. * Besides actual lessons, the broadcast programs offer current events, talks on home-making, psychology, English usage, Literate, sociology, radio and book reviews Dr. Jennings hopes ‘that, before long, the patients . may have the choice of three sets of broadcasts. Two would be. given over the two major networks, while the ‘third would carry the sanatorium’s own Saueational and recreational pro-
Though its progress may: be hampered, Sunnyside spends little time in complaining. Daily, with the means at hand, it is working toward the ancient ideal of a sound d mind in a sound bod;.
