NEW PEACE BID FROM GERMANY EXPECTED SOON
Press Stresses Duce's Plea As Hitler Returns From Polish Front.
BERLIN, Sept. 26 (U. P.) —Germany, in co-operation with Italy, | may make a “final” peace move this week, diplomatic quarters reported today. Fuehrer Adolf Hitler and Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop arrived in Berlin from the Western Front by airplane today and went immediately to the Chancellory There seemed little hope among Germans that anv peace move could succeed. Nevertheless diplomatic quarters saw evidence that an ef fort might be made to end the wa: on the basis of the “liquidation Poland and so prevent he d ment of big scale warfare west and on the sea. It was noted that \ press gave prominence to of Premier Benito Mussolini tha the war ought to end now, and also was emphasizing every dav. the German view Great Britain and France had nothing to fight for now.

Adolf Hitler and Joachim von Ribbentrop, his Foreign Minister were expected back today from the Polish front. In Berlin, Herr Hitler would be able to hold the preliminary conferences and seek the necessary reports before engaging in any diplomatic move, Regardless of peace talk. emphasis Was put on preparations for a long War. Daily there are new orders showing these preparations—further cutting of the already severely reduced number of private automobiles and taxicabs: prohibition of the sale of bar chocolate of all kinds; mobiliza- | tion of more classes of the women's labor corps. Orders such as these appear inconspicuously in the newspapers each day, while reports are displaved prominently of British and French rationing measures and allegations of “defeatism” and “depression” in Great Britain.
People Appear Confident |
Millions of Germans seem to helieve that the weight of the Nazi war machine has only to be thrown against the West to bring another quick victory Even well-informed Germans talk of a ferocious “antiblockade” and aerial ‘‘counter-at-tack” by Germany which would end the war in a comparatively short time, People who a month age insisted with complete assurance that Britain In no circumstances would fight! “because she is too weak and anvhow she is just bluffing” now said. with an equal show of conviction, that Germany could defeat Britain and France and dictate peace terms! within 18 mon ths {

Crew Tells of Race With Sub
LONDON, Sept. 26 Survivors of the torpedoed British freighter Hazelside, 4646 tons, of Newcastle, told today how their master had made a gallant race for safety under the shell fire of a German submarine which attacked without warning and, having sent all of his men he could into the only remaining boat, jumped into the sea and drowned as his ship was sinking. Twenty-three of the crew were saved; 11, including the captain, Joseph Davies, and the chief and third engineers, were lost. Men brought ashore said that the submarine appeared on the surface and fired. Two men were killed.
