‘Rains Came, And Experts ~ Got All Wet
It Was a a Difficul Job Dressing Tyrone Power As Maharajah.
Every once in a while there comes to a producer the chance to deck out his star ia bright bunting and show hit off. That chance came to Darryl F.
Zanuck, producer, and Clarence Brown, director, when they cast Tyrone Power in “The Rains Came,” opening today at the Indiana. Tyrone is cast as Major Safti, Mahfarajah-elect to the State of Ranchipur.. He has a mustache and is dark brown. He rated a warde robe more expensive than Leadiny Lady Myrna Loy and, of course, a great deal better than that of George Brent, who is a mere European. The first problem involved was research. Three men were found —Major George Remington, Charles Whittaker and Hussain Nashri, all Indian experts. It was their job to be sure that Mr. Power was dressed as an Indian Tyrone’s turban had to be wound correctly. « Belon=?*ng to the warrior class, his had to go a certain way and none other. Hollywood Shakes Off Its Shackles And Moves Into Field of Education.
American field. There were two reasons. First, there wasn’t a big market; second, there was little co-operation among would-be producers. The few documentary films issued were lost in an impenetrable forest of Gables, Crawfords and Lombards. But actually the market will take care of itself when the product is available. To meet the need for co-operation the Association of Documentary Film Producers has been organized. Few of us have had the chance to see “The River,” “Spanish Earth” or “China Strikes Back.” Given the opportunity, most persons would go around the corner simrly because they're not used to that type of picture.” The “400,000,000” exhibited here this summer is an example of that. = = =
IT BEGINS to look, however, as if things might be different. Major George Fielding Eliot, famed military expert, has alloved his best-seller on national defense, “The Ramparts We Watch,” to be made into a picture. The best news about that is that March of Time, although not the producer, is distributing it. It will show soon at the Indiana Theater here. Those who have seen the film
