\ Palin Drives Trotting Star To New Two-Mile Mark; Favorites Win.

By TOM OCHILTREE . Yes, sir, the fabulous Greyhound did it again. Under the urging of Sep Palin, Indianapolis, the long-legged gelding that looks like the first cousin of a milk horse when standing still and a symphony of muscles and

rhythm when in motion, went twice around the State Fair track yester-

day afternoon in 4:06 to slice four and a quarter seconds off the two-| mile trotting record established by | Peter Manning in 1925. But Greyhound is more than a trotter, an actor.

plete sophistication of a champion, constantly turned to eye the crowd. The big grey fellow wanted to be sure the prope. dramatic suspense had been created. The new two-mile mark was another world’s record for this greatest trotter of them all. Greyhound holds the mile figure of 1:55% and during the Fair week program several days ago this horse and Rosalind broke their own world’s hitched trotting record by going the mile in 1:58%. Astra Cleans Up

While you are at it, mark an “X” for excellent for Peter Astra and Blackstone and Dr. Hugh M. Parshall who rode behind them. In these perilous days for sports experts’ predictions it is a pleasure to see two favorites who act according tc specification. The mahogany colored Peter Astra, winner of the Hambletonian and an illustrious son of Peter Volo-Astra, was a top-heavy favorite to take top honors in the $7049 championship stallion stake for 3-year-old trotters. He did everything expected of him, too, winning all three heats in the times of 2:05%, 2:04'4 and 2:09 to the keen delight of his owner, Dr. LL. M. Guilinger, Andover, O., who was in the stands. Peter Astra’s performance was good for $2947 of the total purse Race standings of the other horses in the field were Bagpiper, who was second in the first and third heats and third in the middle one, second; Sir Walter, who was second in the second heat and third in the other two, third; Ned Abbeyl, fourth every heat, fourth; Basil Hanover, fifth; Bunker Hill, sixth, and Belmont Hanover, seventh,

Kicks Dust in Rivals’ Faces

At no time was Peter Astra in serious danger of defeat once he] made his move. In the first heat he trailed until the stretch and then kicked dust in all their faces coming home, and he was even more in command in the second heat. Harry Pownall used some driving strategy with Bagpiper in the third heat. Ccming to the front early this horse slowed up the field for

Blackstone, driven by Dr. Hugh M. Parshall, leads Duke of York, piloted by Harry Short, with Doctor Rankin third around the far turn at the State Fair Grounds track in the championship stallion

stake for pacers. These three, the only ones entered, finished in this

the tall Brown Bomber—broke camp at Brighton yesterday and motored into Detroit after eight long weeks of training. Louis and his entourage broke camp at Northville this morning and came to town in time for the noon weighing-in at the State Fair Grounds race track, where Joe expected to scale 201 and Pastor 187. Pastor and his manager, Jimmy Johnstone, say he'll surprise the boxing world by beating Louis be-| cause he has improved 300 per cent since their last fight. But betting men emphasize that Louis kayoed Tony Galento in the fourth round in June, and that Galento kayoed Young Lou Nova last week at Philadelphia. Also that this same Nova was good enough to hold Pastor to a draw in February 38. By this reasoning, Pastor is an inferior fighter to Louis. The bout is slated to start at 8:30] p. m. (Inidanapolis Time). It will be broadcast over the NBC Blue network, a supporting heavyweight card of four four-rounders and two six-rounders goes with it. The winner is expected to defend | the crown against Galento in June,

three quarters of the way around, with Pownall figuring that if he; saved his horse he might have a chance in the brush for the finish.| Going into the stretch Peter Astra was second, right behind Bagpiper, and when Sir Walter moved up along the outside, it looked as though they might have | worked the favorite into a pocket. As they neared the wire, however, | Peter Astra had too much go for the other two, and the flying] Hambletonian winner came the last| quarter in :28'%, taking Bagpiper | by half a length while Sir Walter was third, a full length back.

In Straight Heats

Blackstone, owned by B. C. Mayo, | Tarboro, N. C, won $711 of the $1586.50 purse in the pacing divi- | sion of the championship stallion stakes by winning all three heats. Times for the colt were 2:06%, 2:07 and 2:07. Bob Kirby of the Junior Chamber | of Commerce promotion committee, gave the calls on the first heat, and if I was Blackstone, I think I'd sue. An Indiana horse, Passport, owned by Mrs. Myrtle Dresbach Chalmers, won the first heat of the 2:14 class pace in 2:04, but Queen's Mac, a party crasher at heart, took the next two heats in 2:03'2 and 2:04 to win the race. Every finish was good in this event, the $708 Junior Chamber of Commerce stake, with Queen's Mac, Passport, Dell Frisco, Adam Jr, and John Dillard fighting it out down the duty stretch in every heat. Their final race standings were in the above order. In the third heat Queen's Mac took the lead at the half but just managed to hang on to edge out Adam Jr, who was] second, and John Dillard, who was third that time.

Fast Exhibition Mile

In arranging the Champion’s Day program, the Junior Chamber of Commerce provided for four exhibitions against time. Dean Hanover, owned by the Hanover Shoe Farms, Hanover, Pa., and driven by I... B. Sheppard, trotted an exhibition mile in 1:59':. This wasn't as good as the present record of this 3-year-old trotting champion of 1:58'2 made in 1937 at Lexington, Kv, with an 11 year-old girl, Alma Sheppard, doing the driving. In other time exhibitions Dale Hanover, owned by Eibridge T. Gerry, New York, and driven by Harry Pownall, established a new personal trotting mark for the mile of 2:01
