JANE JORDAN— EAR JANE JORDAN-I read in The Times 2 letter signed “Sam” and believe me it sure was very disgusting. This married man is posing as single and trying to get rid of a sick wife! What is the matter with the law? I do not believe his wife is at fault about the fussing he complains of. It takes two to carry on a quarrel. He probably caused his wife to have poor health. As for divorce, I would say no, let him tough it out. The other woman should give him the cold shoulder for he does not know the meaning of love. If he cannot make a go of it with one woman he never will with another. He should be mace to support his wife and if he is too low to help her jail would be a good place for him. I had the same kind of a man. He posed as a single man and insisted on a divorce. I stood that for 12 years and then sued for divorce. He has to pay me a very small sum for support. I also am in ill health, a stranger in this city, and have no work. Isn't that a rotten deal for a man to hand his wife? Please tell me what is lower. I have met quite a few men at dances and their first cry is that they are so abused by their wives. I tell them plainly that I do not care for their company. A married man’s place is with his wife and no excuses. As an adviser I should think you would have ignored such a letter. My neighbors all agree with me, I hope Sam reads your answer. DISGUSTED NEIGHBORS. 5 5 & a 5 & Answer—Your letter assumes that all wives are right and all husbands are wrong. This, of course, is not true. Many woman have made their husbands completely wretched as well as the reverse. It does not take two to make a quarrel. It takes two to make peace. One unaided person, by his own disagreeable attitude toward others, can ruin the peace of those whose fate it is to live with him. You have had an unhappy experience for which you disclaim any responsibility. Did it take two to make a quarrel in your case? What you have done is to project your hostility toward your own husband to all married men. This is unfair and will cause you much unhappiness. I am afraid that you and your neighbors are more interested in the economic aspect of marriage than its emotional harmony. That is to say that meal tickets are more important than lovers. Granted that a married man is responsible for his wife's support, but he cannot be made to love her. No law lets him off from the financial angle of his contract, but what can it profit a woman to insist upon the sacrifice of the man’s whole life along with support? All she does is to dedicate herself to hate and shut out the possibility of new and happier adjustment for herself. I do not write in defense of Sam for I do not know him. Perhaps he made his wife sick. Perhaps her illness is a device to avoid the responsibility for herself. I do not know. I only know that it won't make the woman well to perpetuate a marriage with a man who doesn’t want her. There is no health in hate but sometimes love has curative qualities. Isn't it better for her to accept financial aid from an ex-husband until she finds someone else to love than to devote the rest of her life to getting even with him? JANE JORDAN.
