11 Joliet Guards Drugged When Convicts Attempt Prison Break.
JOLIET, Ill, Sept. 15 (U. P).— Forty-eight convicts were held in solitary confinement at Stateville Penitentiary today while officials investigated an unsuccessful escape plot in which 11 guards and a trusty were fed a powerful drug in their coffee. Five guards became seriously ill but will recover. Warden James E. Ragen said the poisonings had been engineered, apparently with the assistance of other inmates, by three long-term murderers, Patrick Joyce, 32, and Joseph Jazorak, 44, and Peter Balciulis, 28, Rll from Chicago. UNDERTAKER TESTS STATE PENSION LAW
BRAZIL, Ind. Sept. 15 (U. P.).— B. E. Schoppenhorst, Clay City undertaker, today had filed suit to challenge a provision of the Public Welfare law requiring that persons applying for old-age pensions assign any real property to the welfare department. He asked that the Circuit Court set aside an assignment to the department by Martha Jane Benty before her death. He alleged that she did not leave a personal estate large enough ta pay funeral costs and other bills and said the property, valued at $600, would pay the debts.

In addition to the murderers. 45 convicts who worked in or had access to the kitchen were placed in solitary confinement. Warden Ragen said toxicologists had not identified the drug but believed from the svmptoms of the stricken guards that it might have been atropine, which paralyzes the cardiac and respiratory centers. I talso was reported that the drug might have been siramonium, from the dried leaves of the jimson week, abundant in the prison vard. The convicts, it was said, could have obtained a quantity of the weeds and smuggled them into the Kitchen,
