But Stulehaker Head Warns Against Restriction Of Business.
NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (U. PP). — Paul G. Hoffman, president of the Studebaker Corp. today condemned business restrictions as breeding grounds for totalitarianism and charged businessmen with responsibilitv for much of the regulation that has “tended to destroy freedom and competition in business.” Addressing the annual convention here of the sales finance comnanles. Mr. Hoffman warned that
“free enterprise is In 2reater danger |
from business reactionaries than it is from the Communists. Mr, pean war is being fought on the issue of free enterprise versus feudalism but warned "we must realize the opportunity war abroad provides for the expansion of government business control in this country.” He said that most businessmen demand free enterprise as a right, but sometimes “forget that it is nou a natural right but a privilege emanating from a government that is presumed to represent all the people. "Free enterprise does not mean {reedom to exploit customers or abor, or to engage in anv competitive practices that are unfair.” Minority groups which seek price production controls which lead “inevitably” to regimentation must be fought, Mr. Hoffman asserted. In the field of labor, the defense of all employers and condemnation of all labor leaders “must cease” and some discrimination be used. “We must recognize that free enterprise is in greater danger from business reactionaries than it is from the Communists. The time has come when lip service to free enterprise isn't enough. We must get out and fight for it,” he concluded.
