JANE JORDAN—
EAR JANE JORDAN—I am the wife of “Perplexed Husband” whose letter appeared in The Times. He exaggerates the number of times I see and write to my former so-called “lover.” I have seen nim only twice in the past year and then on his initiative and there has been an exchange of only two or three casual letters in the past year. It is true that I don't like women and prefer men as friends. My only interest in my men friends is friendship and politeness in connection with my work and club activities, but my husband thinks these are merely socially acceptable names for sex. He thinks that if I like to talk with men instead of women it is a sign of incompatibility between us and that he is not making me happy. I can’t make him understand that in my eyes he is the only perfect man. He is wrong again when he says I advocate jealousy as a weapon for holding men. I never advocate it, nor practice it. Nor am 1 cruel as you say in your answer, I wouldn't hurt him and alwavs have been careful of his hypersensitive feelings. If, as he says, he is losing his respect and love for me, what can 1 do to win it back? Not one man in a million would see this problem as he does, and what can I do to correct myself or him, for T can’t tolerate the idea of losing him. It would kill me, PERPLEXED WIFE,
» »
Answer—If always is interesting {0 hear the other side of a problem but 1 seldom have that advantage. 1 only can give one-sided answers to one-sided letters. I have no doubt but that vour husband has exaggerated your interest in other men, but let us see how much foundation in reality he has for his complaint. I do not agree that one man in a million would react to the problem as he does. On the contrary not one man in a million would react with complacency to his wife's correspondence and meetings with a former suitor, no matter how infrequent or how casual. A more sophisticated man would have concealed his feelings. A more primitive man would have stopped it all with a club. No man in love would have viewed it with complete indifference. Now you can’t put your husband through the wringer without getting into trouble. Your trouble is that now your husband suspects even your most casual contacts with men, and sees them all as a menace to his happiness. Granted that he is acting like a hurt child who is afraid of everything instead of a strong man who is able to hold his own against all competition. But you cannot disclaim all responsibility for having brought about this state of mind. Cruelty is an ugly word, associated with battle, murder and sudden death. It's subtler forms are usually called by prettier names. Now if you cannot tolerate the idea of losing your husband, you must learn not to wound his masculine pride. You do not have to run and hide every time you see a man, but neither do you need to do anything so unnecessary as writing to or meeting with a married man who formerly courted you. If he means nothing to you this should be easy to renounce. Your husband will have to do his part by not objecting to ordinarv courtesy toward men whom you meet socially or in business. If vour conversations with them are not flirtatious, I think he should be ahle to tolerate them without going inte a tailspin. JANE JORDAN,
Put your nreblems In a letter to Yane Jordan. wha will answer your guestions in this column daily,

‘Air Raid Shelter Suit’ Latest for Women Of Paris.
ARIS, Sept. 14 (U. P.).—Now the Parisian dress designers are working on a new one-— the “air raid shelter suit.” During the first air raid alarms many women ran into the shelters only half clothed. Soon the demand for practical suits was heard, One Parisian designer now shows a suit that is a cross between mechanics’ overalls and beach pajamas. It has wide-bot-tomed trousers, big pockets and is lined with wool to provide warmth against chilly cellars. New hand bags are designed to hold first aid Kits as well as powder puffs and lipstick.
