ON THE RADIO

TONIGHT 6:00—~Rudy Vallee, WIRE, 7:00—~Good News, WIRE, 8:00—Music Hall, WIRE. 8:00—Columbia Workshop, WFBM.

Good News of 1940 returns to the air tonight and presents two new members in the cast—Walter Huston and Roland Young. Mr. Huston will be master of ceremonies. Although perhaps best known for his portrayals of Abraham Lincoln and Dodsworth, more experienced theatergoers will remember him as the carnival man in “The Barker” and the baseball rookie in Ring Lardner’s “Elmer the Great.” Mr. Young makes his debut as a regular radio performer tonight. His first motion picture role was opposite John Barrymore in “Sherlock Holmes” almost 18 years ago.

As one of the highlights of the program Meredith Willson, musical director, will play “Barcarolle” from the “Tales of Hoffman.” He will announce the name of the first American composer to be commissioned to write a typical American barcarolle. Connie Boswell will sing the second movement of “Deep Purple,” entitled “Lilacs in the Rain.” Baby Snooks, Daddy and Billie Burke will be there, too. » » ”

When Norman Corwin wrote the poem, “They Fly Through the Air With the Greatest of Ease,” there was no threat of immediate war. He repeats a performance on Co- ” EJ »

lumbia Workshop at 8, CBSWFBM. The poem is about the great war bombers. . . . Edward Everett Horton and Rudy Vallee will be called upon to “take it” on the latter's program tonight. Known as fashion plates, they'll play repartee with Elizabeth Hawes, author of “Fashion Is Spinach.” Miss Hawes has very strong ideas about men’s clothing. . . . Sigrid Gurie comes to the Music Hall with Barry Fitzgerald of the Abbey

Players and Florence George of the .

Chicago Civic Opera at 8, NBCWIRE. . . . Lenore Ulric will be on the “It's Up to You” program with Dale Baxter at 6:30, NBC-WLS.

o » =

Jessica Dragonette, who gave an introductory concert last week, will return for a series of programs at 6, NBC-WENR. ... A world crisis is prophesied by the stones of the Great Pyramid, according to John Hix, scripter of Strange As It, Seems, 6:30, CBS-WF3M.. .. Mutual broadcasts the first part of “Faust” from the Atlantic City Steel Pier Opera Company tonight. . . . Mu= tual also brings John Steele, their London correspondent ta a new 8:15 broadcast. He starts tonight and will be heard on alternate Thurs days. ” ” n

Plans are approaching completion for the wiring of television and radio broadcasts all over the country into hotels and large apartment houses. The programs will come over local telephone wires Which will be leased by the pros gram producers from local tele. phone companies. ” o
