HEAT ROCKETS TO LIMIT IN ALL AMERICAN PITS
Other Grain Prices Also Soar in Frenzied Trade On War News.
CHICAGO, Sept. 1 (U. P)— Wheat soared the 5-cent limit and stayed there in North American grain markets today as the beginning of a European conflict Stimulated a frantic demand for bread grains. September wheat at Chicago, the only future allowed to fluctuate as much as 8 cents either way under exchange rules, skyrocketed 77% cents to within 1% cent of the limit, then fell back to a %7-cent gain around mid-session. All Winnipeg wheat futures surged upward the 5-cent limit at the opening, and Kansas City and Minneapolis followed suit. It was the biggest bull market in wheat since the years of the World War when Chicago wheat climbed to $3.50 per bushel. After the opening rush to buy which swept up all the available offerings, wheat trading came to a standstill, except in the September future, and traders turned their attention to the coarse grains. Chicago corn and oats futures
were both up their limits of 4 and 3 Ad
cents a bushel respectively at midsession, and rye shot up the permissible 5 cents. Soybeans were 3% (4 to 4 cents higher.

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (U. P.)—A rush to buy “war babies” sent those issues soaring on the stock market today after the list had experienced its widest decline since January. All markets assumed a war pattern. Bonds broke sharply in the heaviest trading of the year. The stock market's big boom came in the last hour. At 2:18 p. m. the ticker fell behind a minute despite abbreviation of quotations. By 2:25 p. m. the flurry was over and the tape cleared. United States Steel touched ig off 2%, early and then jumped to just under 48. Bethlehem rose nearly 7 points from its low. Douglas Aircraft touched 58; and then shot|cCo up to 642, the latter up 4%. Sperry rose from 37%, to 42%, up 3%. Anaconda sold at 22% to 28, up 4% points.
ing sold at 46, up 4; Crucible Steel 35%, up 6; Guantanamo Sugar preferred 17, up 7; United Aircraft 36%, up 2%; Vanadium 24, up 3, and Youngstown Shest & Tube 38%, up 2%.
