Same Old Turf for Cup | Play
[t's Lawn Tennis but There Won't Be Much of A Lawn.
By HENRY M'LEMORE
United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Sept. 1.-—If they held the World Series on a concrete diamond, or the National ‘Open Golf Championship on a nine-hole public course, it would be no more ridiculous than to hold the Davis Cup tennis matches on the sort of turf on which they will be played this year, Word ' from Philadelphia has it that the center courts of the Merion
Cricket Club, where Australia will challenge for ‘the international trophy this week, are withered and seared and by tomorrow will be in as terrible condition as were the Germantown courts a year ago. It was a disgrace last year when the Australians, who were asked to come and play lawn tennis on a lawn, were confronted by the halfbare weed patches of Germantown. They were so bad dismayed officials dyed them to give them some appearance of green, It is impossible for any player to ghow his best game on such courts. The ball simply refuses to bounce true. Such & court is terribly unfair to the Australians. American players are accustomed to such courts, and refuse to allow bad bounces to throw them off their games, But the Australians can't adopt themselves to such poor sur faces during their brief visits, What should the United States Lawn Tennis Association do about the situation? There would seem to be but two alternatives—either hold | the matches where there are de- | cent grass courts, or adopt a surface | like en tout cas or clay or concrete that can always be maintained at a | certain standard. There are good | grass courts in this country. There | are some at Longwood in Boston, at Seabright, at Forest Hills, and at Newport. But the various national | championships and cup matches | must be divided among the varfous clubs of the association, lest there be a revolt. Every club demands chance to make a little money. I am not advocating the elimination of grass court tennis. However, if the U. 8S, L, T. A. continues to find it impossible to provide enough | decent turf courts in various sec. | tions of the country, then the game must be abandoned.
