OF PRODUCTION
New Model Year to Provide Independent Makers Better Prospects. |
DETROIT, Sept. 1 (U. P.).—The| atuomobile industry moved into full production of 1940 models this week | (with a few exceptions) and indica- | tions were that the new model year! will provide: | 1. Better prospects for indepen | dent manufacturers. 2. Increased consumption of steel. uy general lowering of retail
prices. Studebaker showed a gain the first six months of 1939 over the first half of 1938 amounting to 1039 per cent despite the fact that sales amounted to only 2.5 per cent of the total sales by the industry.
Nash Third Most Active
Nash, representing 2 per cent of | the industry's sales, was the third most active in the industry with a) 63 per cent gain over its 1838 position. | It is believed that both Nash and Studebaker will continue their per-/ formance in 1940 because they are offering good looking cars and have a greatly strengthened sales organization. | Hudson, Packard and Willys were at the bottom of the list in 1938 but a change is seen for next year.| The opinion is that Hudson has the best looking car it has ever offered the public. Fackard offers several improvements, Willys has undergone a financial reorganization and has
New designs, from stem to stern, for most of the 1940 models will increase steel consumption, local experts predict. Steel used by the auto industry this vear amounted to 3 miilion tons. Plymouth alone will require approximately 4.250.000 square feet more sheet steel than last year. Packard Cuts Prices
Packard led the way in announcing price reductions for its 1940 line. President M. M. Gilman said reductions would amount to $120 on the lowest priced line to as much as $400 on the big eight and including the $100-$300 cuts made in May this year. Prices on Hudsons are being reduced about 5 per cent or from $25 to $43. Price cuts on the new
tions on the new Willys range between $30 and $40 on each car. Dodge officials claim riding in their 1940 model is so smooth that a violinist can play Schubert's Serenade or some other classical compogition while traveling as fast as the law allows. | “Full floating ride” is what Dodge ¢alls the lack of undulations usually found at high speeds in an automobile. t

in the automobile industry's new sealed beam headlights fresh hope for greater safety in driving after dark, a consensus of opinion showed | today. { The traffic specialists believe that! the new headlights to be featured on the majority of 1940 cars wll offer greater safety by enabling motorists to see better for a greater distance and with a greater ease.

Y, Sept. 1.—A country-wide analysis shows that the Ford dealer today is in health-| fer shape from the standpoints of | structure, inventory and used car liquidation than in several years, according to J. R. Davis, Dearborn, Mich, general sales manager of the Ford Motor Co. ‘Bottle Messages’ to Seek Data on South Seas Area
WASHING , Sept. 1 (U. P). —Prof. Wilbur A. Nelson, of the University of Virginia, today re-
South Seas. Outlining the itinerary of a scientific expedition he will head for the National Geographic Society and his university, he told of his intention to throw 2009 citrate of magnesia bottles into the sparkling, blue waters of the South Pacific. The messages inclosed in the bottles, however, won't be like those

The expedition will conduct studies designed to assist both sea and air navigation and make researches into geology, gravity, magnetism and marine biology. Many of the South Sea islands have magnetic conditions which swing compasses a few degrees. Prof.
Nelson said that such a magnetic force might have something to do with the failure of Amelia Earhart when she tried to span the Pacific. Scores of letters have been ad-
dressed to the expedition mostly by persons wanting to go along. A letter from Ezra R. Frost of New York City ,asking the expe-
dition to look for any trace of Capt. John Frost or his airplane. Capt. Frost disappeared July 17, 1927, after he took off from San Francisco for Honolulu in the Dole Boiling
