By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Service Sports Editor HAVERFORD, Pa, Aug. 31.—John Bromwich's defeat by Ferenc Puncec and his bogging down somewhat in doubles in the AustralianJugoslavian matches may have buoyed some American Davis Cup hopes, but those closest to the situation throw out the two-handed player's performances at Brookline. Jack Bromwich is another Robert L. Riggs .. . thoroughly relaxed until called upon to give everything he has in the ciutches. Bromwich has pointed for the challenge round and, Riggs, is expected to hit his peak on the courts of the Merion Cricket Club, Sept. 2-4. Bromwich and Adrian K. Quist] will carry the entire load of the Land Down Under . . play in singles and doubles. Riggs and Frankie Parker, the amazin» comeback, will look after this country in singles, and it has been decided to use Joe Hunt of Los Angele: and the United States Naval Academy and 18-year-old Jack Kramer, Montebello, Cal, high school boy, in doubles. They Average 201% Years Kramer rounds out the youngest team ever to appear in the international competition. The quartet's average age is only 20'c years. In their doubles match with Puncec and Franjo Kukuljevic, the Yugoslavs, at Chestnut Hill, Quist and Bromwich were by no means the truly great team they had appeared to be in winning the national doubles crown the week before. Both had letdowns that a great team should not have in so important a match as a Davis Cup tie.
Off to Bad Start
Bromwich appeared so uncertain and lacking in confidence through the first half that schooled observers could not help thinking he would have to be a lot better if he hoped to conquer Riggs. But in the final singles matches in Boston, Bromwich repelled Dragutin Mitic inj straight sets and Quist disposed of the mighty Puncec the same way, nce more demonstrating that grass oes not grow under the Australians’ eet when the chips are down. This may not be the strongest ch: Ym Australia has shown since the Fy s of Brookes, Wilding, Patterson cor 4 Hawkes, but it is good enough » stir up plenty of trouble for ¢ singles players like Riggs and Parkar and a young doubles combination
Sarah Palfrey Fabyan will engage in an exhibition match following the doubles. The stands are completed and it is expected that a capacity crowd of 7000 will watch the three-day series. The United States is after its 13th Davis Cup challenge round victory since 1900. It seeks'to hold the trophy for the third straight year. I agree with the non-playing captain, Walter L. Pate, in that this country has a 50-50 chance of doing so.

Uncle Charlie's Column
Whenever people remark on the excellent and unvarying taste of Hi-Bru, as they often do, I can’t help thinking of the old days—1I mean the real old in brownies, hobgoblins and other spirits played a more important part in the making of beer than the brewmaster, According to the ancient superstitions, the presence of hobgoblins would spoil beer, and brownies, being good spirits, would protect it. Fermentation was also supposed to be aided by a rousing good song or two.
I guess the poor brewers of those

day, a member claimed the horse was | still ahead of the tractor for general | farm use. Our fondness for horses makes us half-way hope he’s right. We sometimes get kind of homesick for the old days when we used to deliver our beer in big white wagons behind big, round, chunky horses, their coats all glossy and their brass buckles and hame-knobs all flashing in the sunlight. We couldn’t deliver Hi-Bru fast enough thatway now. Butwe’ll wager you'd get a thrill from seeing those majestic animals coming down the street that you'll never get from one of our modern trucks. We like anyone who has a kind word for horses;
Once upon a time it was illegal for a brewer to sell his beer or ale until the official “conner” or taster approved it. The most efficient “‘conner” today is the public. Its favorable verdict has made Falls City Hi-Bru the fastestselling beer in city after city.
Here at the brewery we get a lot of pleasure out of seeing how Hi-Bru’s good taste is making it the fastest-selling beer in one city after another. There's | } real satisfaction in making something that so many people enjoy. Our famous brewmaster, who learned his art in the old country, sure knows what it takes, and he’s iguy proud of Hi-Bru’s reputation;
