OLLYWOOD, Aug. 81.-It was fun while it lasted--the reunion of
people and memories In making "Hollywood Cavaloade” And yet there was a melancholy finality about the tossing of those ous tard pies and the frantic chases by the comedy Kops and the frivoling of the bathing beauties. Nobody eould pretend that all this was a revival of anything: it was merely official _confirmation of the death of a brave and silly era. - And one of these days, out at 20th-Fox, a painter will put a new name on the door of the office that has been occupied by Mack Sennett, For a better idea of what the stocky, gray and amiable excomedy King means to movies from Chaplin and Dressler to W CO. Fields and Bing COrosby-you should come into his office and hear him talk,
» . " HE Dressler part began back in Northampton, Mass. aboyt 1901, when Sennett was a young man of 17 taking voeal lessons and dreaming of an opera or
stage career, His name was Mieckall Sinnott then. One day when Marie Dressler's show was coming to town, his sympathetic mother said, "Here's your chance Maybe you can get a small part in Miss Dressler's company-if you can get in to see her” Migs Dressler was kind, She said ghe had no place in her company, and that maybe it wouldn't be wise for him to think of going on the stage at all, for it was a hard and hazardous life, “But did you ever drive hot rive ets all dav.” he asked. “That's no eineh, either!” She laughed and sald, “Well, you might as well start at the top, then, I'll give you a note to David Belasco, in case you ever get to New York."
barely buy stamps to write mother about how well I was getting along. Then I heard about the Blograph company down on 14th St, Pletures weren't a very respectable profession for good actors in those times, so I managed to get a few bits, “I knew I was a misfit as an actor, so I decided to be a direc tor, then, 80 I asked for a try at them. Well, sir, T made the rowdiest, hammiest, all-around lousiest comedies ever geen, They were so rough that half my cast was in the hospital half the time, But the customers laughed, “The Blograph company was owned by the Empire Trust erowd «<a bunch of sedate old blue bloods—-and they were shocked by the vulgarity of the stuff. D, W. Griffith called me in and said I'd have to tone down my pietures, or else “There was no arguing with him. Instead, I sneaked into the accounting department and looked up the receipts on Biograph flims, Right away I saw that my job was safe and my comedy formula was sound, My slapstick pietures were cleaning up-—making more money than some of the eples!”
