CORRECTED TERMS

The number of petitions asking correction of erroneous sentences of State prisoners reached 600 today as the State Clemency Commission granted 55 more petitions for adjustment. This brings to 96 ‘the number of prison sentences corrected by the DH this week. The erroneous sentences resulted from the failure of judges to interpret properly a 1935 law which specified that sentences for burglary and robbery should be determinate instead of indeterminate. Hundreds of prisoners have been sentenced to serve from two to five and three to five years when {they should have been given flat two-year sentences, the Commission said. Action on the remaining 500 petitions for corrected sentences will be taken within the next few days. The corrections mean that many of the prisoners will go free within the next few weeks without having to follow the usual parole hearing procedures.
