After looking at the office equipment, councilmen appeared to be sympathetic with the request but withheld comment as to what they might do. : Because of an increase in the load placed on Juvenile Court by a new indigent: hospitalization law, Judge Bradshaw asked $3402 for two additional “intake” workers. He also| asked a $268 increase in the chief probation officer’s salary and $1200 for an additional stenographer. The "Council heard a request earlier by Dr. Osear’ D. Ludwig, County health commissioner, for $2000 for a County sanitary inspector. oat Dr. Ludwig told Council members the health office “is inadequately staffed properly to care for health protection of the 80,000 citizens of the county outside the city.” He said the U. S. Public Health Service recommended as a minimum staff for a County health unit a physician, three nurses and a sanitary inspector. The County office here lacks only the sanitary inspector. The Council was expected to review the Detention Home budget later today.
County Cuts Indicated
Nine County department heads were questioned yesterday, and the informal sessions are expected to be « completed by Friday. The questions yesterday indicated that the County Councilmen intend to make heavy slashes in the budget requests, particularly those asking salary increases. : City Councilmen will begin interviewing department and division heads on their requests Thursday in the City Controller's office. Councilman Ernest C. Ropkey will .preside. over the sessions which are expected to continue through Saturday. In a letter covering the proposed budget ordinance, Mayor Sullivan accounted for $164,301.40 oi the $179,424 increase as City obligations in outstanding indebtedness and as

more than offset by cuts in contractual services, including a $74,678.80 cut in contractual services for WPA. On the basis of these figures, a drastic reduction in Park Department WPA projects was indicated. Changes in the Police Department are reflected in budget figures. By reducing the number of police assigned as detective sergeants from 54 to 25, a net saving of $3483 was accomplished. Patrolmen’s salaries will be paid to 30 investigators, most of whom were reduced from the detective sergeant rank. The number of first grade patrolmen was reduced from 336 to 331 and all but one of 10 second grade patrolmen were eliminated. Total salaries for uniformed police were reduced from $839,751.08 currently to $814,950.68. Police radio expenses remained about the same.
Sewage Disposal Less
Garbage collection estimates were increased slightly while the sewage disposal request decreased. correspondingly. Refuse collectioh remained the same. The Streets Commission took a cut of $2300. As department heads took their turn at the County Council table in the Court House yesterday to explain the budgets, councilmen made pencil notations on their budget sheets.

Although the intentions of the councilmen were not revealed, it was reported they were in agreement on many slashes in proposed expenditures. Councilmen, it is believed, intend to reduce the 1940 estimates to the amount allowed for this year.
