‘Armstrong WI 5 Choice In Title Go
35,000 Fans Expected for 15-Round ‘Natural’ Tomorrow.
NEW YORK. Aug. 21 (U. P).— Henry Armstrong, who is used to entering the ring a topheavy favorite, was no better than sevenfive today to retain his lightweight crown against Lou Ambers tomorrow night, and the price may be even money when they climb through the ropes.
Not since Benny Leonard and Lew Tendler tangled in 1923 has there been such a lightweight “natural” as this return Armstrong-Ambers bout, and some 33.000 fans are expected to pay around $150, 000 to see the 15round brawl.
Ambers closed so fast and came so near retaining the 135-pound crown against Armstrong a year ago that there was a public demand for a return go. When the match was signed, Armstrong was a 13-5 favorite, but the uncertain condition of his brittle hands has flushed plenty of Ambers greenbacks in the betting marts. Both concluded their boxing workouts yesterday, and will do only roadwork or light limbering-up exercises today. L Because of the closeness of their last fight, and the uncertainty over the outcome of this one it is a big betting fight. Armstrong’s 147pound welterweight title will not be endangered because of New York's ruling against two titles being at stake in one bout, and because of a contract calling for Armstrong to defend his welter crown within 60 days against Ambers—if Lou wins the lightweight tiara.
Swenson to Face Stecher on Mat
Popeye Swenson, the colorful 236pound Minnesota grappler who claims to have the largest pair of hands of any athlete in the nation, will tangle with Young Joe Stecher, 218, Iowa, to open the outdoor wrestling card tomorrow night at Sports Arena. Young Joe is a cousin of the original Joe Stecher, one-time heavyweight champ. Main go action is between Orville Brown, 234, highly
“%): touted “Indian deathlock” hold spe-
cialist from Kansas, and Angelo ' Cistoldi, 222, aggressive Boston Italian who went good here about a year ago. The extra feature for Sports Arena fans will be the appearance of Daniel Boone Savage, 241, hillbilly grappler from Boyd County, Kentucky. Savage, an easy-going type of performer, sports a heavy beard and is rated one of the best attractions in the game. He faces Johnny Marrs, 215, Minnesota, in the semi-windup.
New Albany Girl Sets Swim Record

U. senior women's long distance swimming title as result of a triumph over a crack field at Clementon Lake. Miss Hardin covered the threemile course in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 27 seconds, breaking the event record by one minute yesterday. The New York City Women’s Swimming Association retained the national three-woman team title. It was represented by Gloria Harden, Helen Rains and Lorraine Fischer.

be as nervous as your Aunt a to South Grove next Sunday.
Because the first and second consolation flights have only 32 players each, the golfers in these two
groups will skip hostilities on Saturday and will launch their combat at South Grove Sunday. Championship flight members will play second-round matches beginnig at 8 a. m. and third-round tilts at 1:30 p. m. Sunday, while members of the other two flights will compete in first-round matches Sunday morning and second roundTs in the afternoon.
UALIFYING Play for this tournament, the big event of the year for the City’s week-end golfers, was run-off at Pleasant Run Aug. 13, and Charles Harter, the Coffin player who is as steady as a dock, gained medalist honors then with a sizzling two-under-par 71. When the qualifying scores were all in and checked it was found there still were three positions open in the championship fight and that 12 players had posted borderline scores of 81 and would have to compete in a playoff. The 12 were Ken Loucks, Coffin; Howard Ely, Speedway; Reid Cotton, Pleasant Run; Ed Schaughnessy, Pleasant Run: Brooks Secrest, South Grove; Cliff Hanson, Coffin; Bob Swenson, Pleasant Run; Marvin Oakley, Coffin; Art Smith, Pleasant Run; Ray Jones, Speedway; Don Rice, Pleasant Run, and Dave King, Pleasant Run. |
Rush Sunday Dinners HESE were the boys who hurried up their Sunday dinners yesterday to report at the East Side course. The playoff only went one hole, however, and Loucks, Cotton and Swenson gained the | three championship flight positions by firing fours. Swenson had to curl in a 12-foot putt to get his, while the other two followed the accepted practice of being on in two and down in two more. The rest had assorted fives, sixes and sevens, and Rice, who powered his second shot over the green and into a ditch, picked up with the remark: “I'd just as soon be in the first consolation flight, anyhow.” | And that is where the nine defeated in the playoff were placed. The border line for this flight was 84, and six players had posted that figure with four, spots open, Dan Hagen, Pleasant. Run, didn’t| show up, and the other five shot it out. On the first hole Earl Fuller, South Grove, and R. Boger, Pleasant Run, got in with fours, and Cecil Bevis, Pleasant Bm, made b with a five.
HAT left oe 2 ee to shoot for, and J. F. Carpenter, Pleasant Run, could have had a five and that spot if he hadn’t missed la sixinch putt. He and O. W. Peters, also of Pleasant Run, went another hole, and Peters won the place with a four on No. 2.
Limit on the second consolation
flight was 87, and 15 players had
shot that with 14 positions unoccupied. Since only 13 turned out for the playoff, a coin was flipped for the two absentees and Roy Sieloff, Pleasant Run, was declared in and Stuart Tomlinson, Pleasant | | Run, out. Prizes also were announced for the boys who required- tournament officials to put in hurry up calls actuaries. H. Nelson shot a 109, the highest qualifying score, and won a camera. Other high shooters, who were given golf balls were: Tom |King,
