"WERT PRICES SOAR 2 CENTS. ~ ON WAR FEARS
Gains in Range to More Than A Cent at Chicago.
CHICAGO, Aug. 21 (U. P.).—War fears stimulated buying of wheat on the Chicago Board of Trade today, and prices climbed more than a cent before profit-taking cut into'the advance. All North American markets were strong. Other grains worked higher in sympathy with wheat. Renewed short covering in the wheat pit just before the close boosted prices to the day’s best levels, and at the close wheat was up 13% to 2% cents, Sept. 681%4-68%; corn was up 1 cent to 1% cents, Sept. 443:-44%, and oats were 3% to % cent higher, Sept. 30%Db. The political tension in Europe encouraged buying at Liverpool where wheat prices closed 3% to 1 cent higher. Winnipeg wheat soared more than 2 cents before heavier offerings checked the advance. In addition to short covering and speculative demand in the local wheat pit based on strong outside markets and the war scare, reports that a fair quantity of wheat had been sold under the new export subsidy plan had a constructive influence. Corn futures followed wheat upward, but reacted on hedge seliing and favorable crop weather.
