models started to lift this week as

+ | .newspapermen were allowed a peek | at some of next year’s cars. Pack-

ard, Hudson, Nash and Willys all held their annual previews for the | press, with Hudson the first to per- | mit reporters to comment publicly. -In the new Hudson line is a new . 8ix in the low-priced field which will bid for some of the business long enjoyed by Ford, Plymouth and Chevrolet. The new six boasts independent front wheel suspension

with Hudson center-point steering;

auto-poise control; new fabrics for interior upholstery . and advanced

styling including a large rear win-|

dow that conforms to the sweeping contour of the body. : - No prices were announced. They will be made public next week.

: New Eight Presented

Sharing the limelight with the new low-priced six was a new eight which engineers claim delivers more than one horsepower for every inch of wheelbase. Companion car to this new eight is the Hudson super six which will be the same as the eight in every respect except the en-

ine. Parking lamps onsall the new Hudsons are contained in the chrome belt molding on the side of the hood. A feature of these lamps is their use as directional safety signals operated by the driver by a switch at the steering wheel. The lights operate in conjunction with a tail light flasher signal, thus giving change of direction to both rear and intersectional approaching traffic. The airfoam seat cushions introduced to the motoring public by Hudson last year have been redesigned for more comfort and smarter appearance. The 1940 models contain new safety features, including the new directional traffic signals, a new heavier armored X-type frame for the new front wheel suspension, further improvement of the dash-locking. safety hood, which hinges at the front and locks inside under the dash board, and redesigned mechanical reserve brake linkage. .

Front End Stays Same

All of the new models maintain the same front end design with the seamless hood and low cat-walk grill. Models are offered with or without running boards. In announcing the new models, A. E. Barit, president of Hudson, said that business generally is on the upgrade. | “Business is better,” he said, “and I feel that it will continue on an upward trend during the future.” The Buick division of General Motors has! announced that its annual convention for dealers and the annual press preview will be held at Flint, Mich., Aug. 23 to Sept. 3. More than 5000 dealers, salesmen, and members of the factory field organization are expected to attend in addition to newspaper editors the country over. A West Coast meeting of Buick dealers will be held |in Los Angeles Sept. 7 for members of the company’s organization | in California, Oregon, Washington and sections of the Rocky-Mountain States.

1940 Hudson Models Are Previewed Here

A preview of 1940, Hudson automobile models was presented by G. H. H. Pratt, general! sales manager of the Hudson Motor Car Co., in the Chateau Room of the Claypool Hotel yesterday. In addition to the preview there was a luncheon and an outline of factory plans and merchandising helps for the dealers.

large exports of petroleum to foreign countries, particularly to the Par East, have seriously depleted this nation’s fuel supply on the Pacific Coast. They are especially concerned about this condition because the Navy's strategists consider the Pacific to be the chief theater of naval operations in any defense emergency. A handy and adequate supply of fuel is essential for naval operation. This realization, it was learned from" a reliable source, was one reason that President Roosevelt recently asked Congress to review| areas. again the matter of oil conserva-| Tests with a solution of nitrotion on a co-ordinated national| cellulose and amyl acetate have basis. : already been made “in the Naval surveys show that the| mouths of a few selected pa17,000,000,000| tients” and on extracted teeth. barrels of oil in its industrial reserves and that the Government has from 300,000,000 to 800,000,000 barrels in reserve. The Navy now uses 8,000,000 barrels of fuel and lubricating oil annually but one expert said that this would be “but a drop compared to the Navy’s demand in case of war. Even this normal peace-time consumption will rise sharply in another year or so because the Navy is in the process of building 101 new ships, including two 45,000-ton warships which will have a tremendous oil consumption. The Navy demand is only one phase of any wartime petroleum consumption. The Army is increasing the number of its mechanized units and is adding thousands of planes to its fleet and all of these units require oil.
