Strike; Lehman Orders Violence Stopped.

UTICA, N. Y.,, Aug. 17 (U. P.)— The Dairy Farmers Union strike for

higher prices in the New York City |} milkshed entered its third day to-|& day with reports of violence, milk | j

dumping, and the death of a picket. The strike spread from Eastern

New York State into Pennsylvania as farmers barricaded highways,

dumped hundreds of cans of milk, and hurled eggs at trucks. Governor ordered county sheriffs to “appoint as many special may desire” to prevent violence. A truck attempting to break through a picket line at the East Smithfield Farms, West Burlington, Pa., struck and fatally injured Paul Hicks of Bradford County, Pa. Police said the picket had refused to move from the truck’s path. The union, which ciaims a membership of 15,000 producers in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont demands $2.35 a hundred pounds (47 quarts) for milk. The present price, under the Federal-State marketing agreement, is $2.25. Reports of milk dumping were received from Oxford, Delhi, Russeil and South Russell. Union officials said that four dealers, the Dairyland, Vogt, Jetter and Soifer had signed union agreements. ; :

SEATTLE, Aug. 17 (U. PP.) —If— as Dr. O. C. Durham contends—the Pacific Northwest is a paradise for the wretches who sniffle and sneeze through} hay fever every summer, the Oregon Trail should be more heavily traveled than it was in the 1860s. plane, slides from a window in the pilot's compartment, then classifying and measuring the pollen with a microscope. wa ; Dr. Durham dropped out of the clouds today after hanging out the window of a plane practically all the way from Portland, Ore., and he
