TRACTION LINES
Authorizes Abandonment of 1 Service to Terre Haute And Louisville.
Gi The Indiana Railroad today was ‘ authorized by the Public Service Commission to abandon two more traction lines. The Commission formally approved the railroad company’s petitions to abandon the IndianapolisTerre Haute line and all service on the -Seymour-Louisville branch of the Indianapolis-Louisville line.
Other Petitions Pending
Other petitions are pending befroe the Commission to substitute trucks and busses on the Indian-apolis-Terre Haute route and substitute frucks on the IndianapolisLouisville line, leaving only pas- ‘. senger services on the traction route . between here and Seymour. No passenger busses are proposed between Seymour and Louisville, The Commission authorized the railroad’ to fix the dates for stopping service-on the lines with a 15day notice period. : The Commission’s action followed similar rulings handed down yesterday and last week by the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington. The ICC approved both the railroad’s abandonment petitions.
Testify to Losses
Petitions to abandon the lines were filed with the Public Service Commission six months ago. Railroad officials during several hearings over a period of two months testified that fhe lines have been operating at a loss for several years. Coincident with the abandonment of the Indianapolis-Terre Haute line, City officials have been talking | of the possibility of buying the railroad's right-of-way for a construction of a “bee-line” highway between the Municipal Airport and downtown Indianapolis. Dismantling of the traction line will pave the way for this proposed project.
ROUND UP ITINERANTS IN TRAIN WRECK QUIZ|'
RENO, Nev. Aug. 16 (U. P). — Failure of investigating officers to establish a possible motive in the suspected sabotage-wreck of the streamline train City of San Francisco Saturday night forced them to embark today upon the laborious task of ‘questioning every itinerant within a three-state area. Insistence of Southern Pacific railroad officials that a rail deliberately: had been moved to cause the tan and yellow train ‘to crash through a bridge over the Humboldt River with a loss of 23 lives, brought FBI agents of all Western bureaus into the case.
