Honor Legion At Concert
U. S. Orchestra Plays in 4th of Rauh Series.
‘The fourth in the Rauh Memorial Library's “Symphony at Sundown” series attracted a crowd of 700 to hear a concert by the Indianapolis Federal Orchestra and an address by National Adjutant Frank E. Samuel of the American , Legion in the library gardens yesterday. Designated as Legion Day, the occasion was marked by the advancing of the colors by the 12th District color guard preceding the concert. Representatives of the American Legion auxiliary and Sons of the Legion, as well as Legionnaires attended. “Here we have no fetters on genius,” Mr. Samuel said in his address. “Here we have no censorship to tell the muses you can’t do this and you can’t do that. That is why America has become the paradise of all branches of learning. Here . . , all the arts of man are now setting the pace for the rest of the world.” Paul Fidlar conducted the orchestra in six numbers, including the “Sentimental Rhapsody” for piano and orchestra by William Pelz, with the composer as soloist. Mr. Pelz, an Indianapolis resident, is Indiana director of the Federal Music Project. Two more concerts remain in the “Symphony at Sundown” series.

EORGE RAFT comes naturally by those “hard-guy” parts he plays in movies like “I Stole a Million,” playing currently at
the Apollo.
le was born on New York's East Side Sept. 26, 1908, in a tenement on Forty-first St. between Ninth and 10th Aves. man and his father was Italian-American.
was Ranft. Young Mr. Ranft did the usual things for a product of the tenement district. He went to school and after school he worked as an errand boy for a vegetable store. On Fridays he wrapped fish in the local market. He did plenty of fighting between wrapping. When he was still a small boy his parents decided he’d never get to be President growing up in Hell's Kitchen. They shipped him off to his grandmother’s home in the Bronx. He went to school there until he was 12. Then he quit. | He was the post-war equivalent of a jitterbug and before long he had graduated into professional dancing. Before he was entitled to vote he was a headliner at places: like Rector’s, Churchill’s and Murray's in New York. During prohibition he danced most of the night club belt. He worked at Texas Guinan's 300 Club and the Larry Faye Club among others. | x x =» Bore he was, definitely launched as a ncer, he tried boxing. He didn’t make a success at that. In 22 professional fights as a bantamweight he was knocked out seven times. He was sitting it out with the boys one night at Hollywood's Brown Derby in 1931 when Rowland Brown, the writer-director, walked in.. Mr. Brown was looking for a “menace with sex ap- | peal.” Mr. Raft's “smoky eyes” got him and he signed him. His first picture, coincidentally, was “Quick Millions,” but he made his big hit as a coin-flipping bodyguard for Paul Muni in
