ATL DUGE'S ORDER
: ROME, Aug. 1 wp —H R Ekins, Rome Bureau. ‘manager of the United Press, was expelled. from Italy today by order of Premier Benito Mussolini. Mr. Ekins and his’ wife, who' came to Rome only a month ago, ‘left on the Paris express at 12:30 p. m.,, accompanied .by two. plainclothesmen| who rode to the ‘border in the coach behind them. The ‘United Press Bureau, which was locked by police ‘when’ they served the expulsion order on Mr. Ekins yesterday still was closed at 1 p. m., but it was believed that the offices would be reopened after: Mr. Ekins had crossed the frontier. The United Press staff maintained their regular shifts, reporting to the headquarters -of the Foreign Press Association in the same building with the U. P. Bureau. ‘Ralph Forte, Mr. EKins’ assistant, was in charge of the staff.’ Although no official reason for ‘the expulsion order was given by the Government, it ‘was believed to have been caused ‘by a London dispatch which the United Press circulated this week quoting private sources in England that Sig. Mussolini had suffered a . heart attack. This was followed by . dispatches from Mr. Ekins saying that the Premier appeared to be in good health Numerous other American newspapermen have been expelled from Italy in recent years, but the closing of ‘the United Press Bueau was the
ever taken in Rome.
