Basil Rathbone, adventuring again as “Sherlock Holmes, sat. chummily in tHe hansom with George Zucco, the dastardly Prof.:Moriarity. The camera was almost in their laps, an just overhead dangled the microphone. % At each of the cab’s windows ‘stood a man with a trickling hose turned on the glass. It was raining in London. Near the left win- ? dow stood an electrician who regularly switched on and off a small - spotlight. The flashes represented

street lamps passed by the vehicle.

Another workman holding a-small . branch of live oak occasionally - ‘brushed it against the same win- + dow to indicate a wayside tree. There were Ann Sheridan and John Garfield in a frontless, wheelless auto for a scene in “Twenty Thousand Years in Sing Sing.” Through the rear window, a process screen showed a receding Fifth Ave. Mr. Garfield drove with a steering wheel which a prop man had bolted to the floor. After a couple of takes, somekody noticed that the process shot indicated that the car stopped a couple of times for traffic lights. Mr. Garfield, however, had been going gayly ahead without shifting gears. Most such scenes, with the camera where the windshield ought to be, look glaringly artificial, but this: error was too obvious to ignore. Everything was halted while-the prop man found and bolted down a gearshift lever. Then an assistant director stood behind: the camera and signaled Mr. Garfield when to go through the motions of stopping and starting for for traffic lights.
