JOY RIDE AUTO THEFTS GAIN IN POLICE REPORT

Petty Crime Also Shows - Increase While Other 1 Complaints Fall Off,

" At the same time, the crime report of the Police Department showed decreases in the number of complaints on robbery, burglary and other types of crime. gated by police as compared to}:

2294 for the same period last year. Efficient Methods Credited

Chief Michael F. Morrissey said he had no explanation for the increase ‘except that a “general increase in this type of crime is expected as police reporting methods become more efficient.” He added “the public has gradually shown an increasingly favorable disposition to report small thefts than before.” Petit larceny reports to police as recorded in official records include “lost or stolen” complaints, Chief Morrissey said.

“year have reached 837, while a total of 693 were received by the Department for the same period last year. This increase was explained by Chief Morrissey as being chiefly due to a wave of automobile thefts by young men and boys. “There have been a great number of young boys who have been taking cars for joy rides this summer,” Chief Morrissey said. “We have apprehended most of the youths who stole the automobiles, but many we are unable to catch,” he said. Although the robbery complaints, according te the report, show a decrease of 96 from last year, Chief Morrissey said there had heen an “increasing” number of certain types of robberies, chiefly holdups of filling stations, drug stores and groceries. He indicated the increase in complaints from these types of establisnments might be the result of operation of one gang. Burglaries, according to the report, have dropped off by 29 since last year. Thus far this year there have been 1423 complaints on this type of crime.

Increase Is Seasonal

Police records have shown that a seasonal increase in burglary complaints can be expected during the latter part of the summer. This is result of the return home of great numbers of summer vacationers. _ The unoccupied homes are usually the ones entered during the summer.’ Another crime upon which there has been an increase is rape. A total of 14 rape complaints have been investigated by police so far

this year as compared to 11 last|

year. Other crimes including assault and battery with intent to kill, manslaughter, and homicide showed marked decreases from last year.

ARRANGE RITES FOR "HORSE FALL VICTIM

Funeral services were being completed today for Miss Anne Garing, 17-year-old Shortridge High School senior, who was killed almost instantly yesterday when she was thrown from a horse at Evansville. Miss Garing had been taking riding lessons the last two weeks and the accident occurred when she lost control of her mount and was thrown. Her head struck a rock, Born here, Miss.Garing had studfed at St. Philip Neri and Holy Cross parochial schools. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral and Alpha Gamma Sorority. She is survived by her partents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Garing, 493 S. Luett Ave.; two sisters, Mrs. Allen Webster, Evansville, and Mrs. Guy Ellis, Indianapolis, and two brothers, Charles M. and Robert Garing, Indianapolis.
