DETROIT, Aug. 9 (U.P) —Edith

.Estabrooks, Dubuque, Iowa, school-

girl, turned in the first major upset of the Women’s Western Golf Championships today when she

came from behind to defeat Marion!

Miley of Lexington, Ky., twice former champion, 2 and 1 in secondround play. Another favored contender was eliminated when Harriett Randall of Indianapolis, even with Dorothy Traung of San’ Francisco, Cal. at the end of nine holes, finished the 18 one up. Miss Traung was Western champion in 1936, ana runnerup for the national crown in 1934. Miss Miley, pre-tournament favor-

ite who held the crown in 1935 and

1937, shot birdies on the first four holes going out today and posted a

36 to make the turn two up on Miss

Estabrooks, 18-year-old girl who was runnerup, to Patty Berg last year. The Kentucky golfer had shattered all previous qualifying marks with a 74, three strokes lower than the course record for women of 77, set by her youthful rival in the Western Girls’ Tournament at Oakland Hills in 1936. But Miss Estabrooks came back. strong in the in-

coming nine to down her opponent | on the 17th hole. Last year also

Miss Miley was the victim of a second-round upset.

ing of LeRoy Dycus, Indianlightweight, to meet Paul , Coatsville, in a four-round completed the card for tonight's fights at Sports

Bun tilt, ‘hi morro Arena. : These two have fought before with Dycus scoring a victory and a ‘draw, but Bunten has had more ring experience since that time. Feature of the program will be an exhibition mdtch between Mickey Walker, former middleweight and welterweight champion, and Lou Thomas, local heavyweight. Walker, who arrived here yesterday, was to hold a brief training session at Sports Arena this afternoon. The eight-round main go is to be between Joe Palmo, Cincinnati featherweight, and Patsy Patterson, Somerset, Ky. Biff Willoughy, Dallas, Tex., and Tommy LaFever, local featherweights, are to meet in the six-round semi-windup, while two local middleweights, Norman Hughes and Wesley Kemp, will fight a five-rounder. Al Sheridan and Noble Bowers, Indianapolis lightweights, are pitted for four rounds.

Ellenberger Wins

| Water Polo Contest

Ejenversy/ today continued to hold a cofifending position for first place in the municipal pool water polo league following a 4-t0-2 victory over Garfield at the Rhodius tank last night. The East Siders’ victory kept pace with the forfeit triumph by the hosts when Willard failed to appear. Rhodius has a record of five triumphs and a single loss, while Ellenberger follows with four victories in six engagements. Tom. Quinn paced Ellenberger with three goals, with Clifford Mathers accounting for the remaining point. Ernie Koch and William Stump were the Garfield scorers.

University athletic director,

Use Datorce and Attack That Can Be Changed, Coaches Told.

By TOM OCHILTREE The theory that football and basketball players should be coached to a system of robot assignments without room for individual initiative was being. badly scuffed up today at the seventh annual Butler University coaching school. Before a rather profound group of 75 Midwest high school ‘coaches, Paul D. (Tony) Hinkle, the Butler

athletic director who is. conducting,

the school, and John (Ox) DaGrosa,

president of the American Foothall.

Institute, explained that the trend was more and more the other way.. Work out a natural system, .they said, that gives participants various optional choices of action during the heat of the struggle and let the opposing team worry about hiring the ambulances.

Mysteries of Craft

Regardless of the fact that ‘the

two topics under discussion still are a bit green on the vine, the pupils

and teachers were busy diagraming | plays on blackboards and arguing

about the various mysteries of their craft such as shifting man-to-man defenses and delayed bucks.

Hinkle, whose net teams have|.

won one national title, two Mis- | 1B

souri Valley crowns and four State championships under his tutelage is handling the basketball instruc‘tion. He explained that the theory

of a good basketball defense was to school players to take advantage of the men guarding them.

Reverse the Guard

They can do this by reversing the guard, working out fast, but comparatively safe cross court passes, and by taking a one-bounea freeing dribble to shake off a tight guard. He worked out, with demonstrations from members of the|school’s team, scoring plays that involved two men (a feeder and a cutter). From {hese he added a third, a fourth and fifth man. The movement of the players was generally in a wheel-like | motion under the basket, with different

men working under and dropping

back, and the variations came from

taking advantage of openings in Ee

front of the basket. Strangely enough, the zone defense, which many Indiana basket-

ball fans have regarded for years | as about as out of style as stere-|

optican slides; has a staunch defender in Coach Hinkle. It can’t be worked very successfully on a full size college floor without badly tir-

ing out the defensive team, he said,

to three

others sputter out like damp firecrackers. trio receiving the instructions are (left to right) C. E. Murphy, Whiteland] Ind.; H. M, Franklin, Ramsey, 1ll., and Bill Neu, Louisville.

Times Photo. The

but on a small floor it is close to unbeatable. : DaGrosa, who is from Philadelphia, has a reformer’s zeal for the defensive five-man line in football, - He classes it as the strongest defense developed which has the added virtue of simplicity. “Every offense in football today is

based on the old six and seven-men lines, with the result that five hardcharging linemen, who don't function in the orthodox way, can throw the offensive team completely into confusion,” he said. “This is the secret -of good modern football— stopping plays or gumming them up at inception. The five linemen, under his system, always take the same pcsitions, and reading from left to right they are: End, tackle, guard, tackle and end. The secret of success is in the three men in the second line of defense. These are the other guard, the center and a back. The two outside men take a step further out as the ball is snapped and the middle one a step back.

‘Acts as Safety Valve

“Purpose of this is to act as a safety valve to keep these three spread,” he declared. “Behind them are two other backs and a safety man still further in the rear.” Under the old orthodox sevenman line system, the linemen generally charge straight forward. Under his system the front five come in diagonally toward a spot roughly in the middle of the offensive team’s backfield.

Both coaches agreed that natural players schooled to notice and capitalze on weaknesses of their opponents were the most successful nowadays, being much superior to the machine-minded type. The school opened Monday and

‘lis to close this week-end. Others

onthe faculty are Ray-Baer, coach of DePont Manual Training High School, Louisville, whose team won the mythical national high school football title, and Paul Brown, coach at Massillon, O., High School

whose team has won the Ohio

championship for four years &and lost only one game in that period.
