Football Fans Vote Elmer Layden Into
. Heavies] in Mat Arena Headliner Roche Tackles Kampfer on
‘Three-Bout Bill; Thom Meets Achiu.
Dorve (Iron Man) Roche, 221, the former Illinois coal miner who is one of the most popular grapplers ever to perform in this territory, mixes with Hans Kampfer, 236, skilled German husky, to top tonight's out-
door wrestling program at Sports Arena.
The powerful German has been here three times, winning without much difficulty from Powerhouse
Frank Sexton, Alabama Bill Lee and Warren ‘Bockwinkle. Roche challenged Hans to tonight's meeting and is determined to make good. Dorve is a speedy performer on the mat and has hung up an impressive record here. Billy Thom, 178, mat coach at Indiana University, opposes Walter (Sneeze) Achiu, 176, Chinese performer, in the semi-windup, while Popeye Swenson, 236, a colorful husky from Minnesota, takes on Harry Kent, 225, Portland, Ore, in the 8:30 opener. Three hundred carriers of The Indianapolis Times will attend the show as guests of Matchmaker Lloyd Carter.

CHICAGO. Aug. 8 (U. P.).—Elmer Layden of Notre Dame laid himself open today to the meanest jinx in football by accepting the offer of six million fans to coach an allstar team against 'New York's world Shampion Ginats the night of Aug.
8 me thing about this jinx—nobody escapes. Misfortune caught up with all five of Layden’s predecessors the season after each served as all-star coach, and every National League champed that bucked the All-stars for charity lost its world title in the spot cash:league before the year was out. Layden may fare better than the others. He had the best Notre Dame team last season since the golden days of Rockne and early reports from «the Irish capital say there is more where that came from and “look out Southern California.” U. S. C. scored the only upset in nine games against Notre Dame last fall.
Irish Pitched In
Elected with Layden were four assistants from the Big Ten, the East, South and Far-West. Harry Stuhldreher of Wisconsin, a teammate of Layden in Notre Dame's famed Four Horseman backfield of 15 years ago, Carl Snavely of rnell, Maj. Bob Neyland of Te ee and Edward P. (Slip) Madigan of St. Mary’s will greet a squaé of 68 college players next Saturday for the
Notre Dame backers in every section of the country roled in votes for Layden and he moved into the lead after the first batch was counted. His total of 5,127,888 points included 1,247,916 first place votes. Stuhldreher was second in total points, but barely defeated Mal Elward of Purdue for the one coaching job allotted the Western Conference. Stuhldreher had 2,918,150 points to Elward’s 2,742,063.
Another Horseman Beaten
‘Lynn Waldorf of Northwestern, Dr. Eddie Anderson of Iowa and H. O. (Fritz) Crisler of Michigan were among the Big Ten leaders. In the East, Snavely finally won out over another of the Notre Dame Horsemen—Jimmy Crowley of Fordham. Snavely polled 1,160,907 to Crowley's 820,478. Ducky Pond of Yale and Columbia's Lou: Little were next in line, but far behind the leaders. Maj. Neyland, who brought the Orange Bowl championship to Tennessee, swept the South by more than a million points. His organized votes totalled 1,496,335 to 210,399 for Dana Bible of Texas and 195,208 for Bernie Moore of Louisiana State. Far West voters fell in line with Slip Madigan over: Tiny Thornhill of Stanford and Buck Shaw of Santa Clara. Madigan drew 894,275 points, Thornhill 565,563, and Shaw

Indianapolis Public Links Association officials, in charge of the event, announced that the early entry list is to close at 5 p. m. tomorrow, and. that entrants wishing preferred starting times in the qualifying round should submit their names to the professionals of their course before that time,
Late entries may be filed with John L. Niblack, association secretary, up to noon Saturday at 525 Indiana Trust Bldg.
Play in the 18-hole qualifying round is to begin at 8 a. m. Sunday at Pleasant Run. Then there will be a lag until Aug. 26, when firstround championship flight matches are-to be held at Pleasant Run. Reason for this is to avoid a conflict in dates with the State Open Championship to be held over the Beechwood Course at La Porte Aug. 19 and 20.
