[Lack of Demand, English
Holiday Restrict Trade At Chicago.
CHICAGO, Aug. § (U. P)—
.
24| Scattered selling in late trading
erased gains in wheat on the Chi-
| cago Board of Trade today, and the
market closed with an easier undertone. At the close wheat was unchanged to off % cent, September 64, corn was up % to 1% cent, September 42%, and oats were % to 3% cent: lower, September 27. : A: holiday at Liverpool and lack of foreign demand for wheat tended to restrict trading interest. Liverpool and Winnipeg wheat markets ‘will both be closed Monday. Hot and dry weather in the Canadian spring wheat belt stimulated
a | early buying both here and at Win-
nipeg, with prices up about % cent. Pre-holiday evening up operations caused a reaction in the Canadian market which was promptly ireflected in the local wheat pit. Traders were inclined to go slow pending the final outcome of the ‘deficiency appropriation for the commodity credit corporation. Hot weather in the corn belt gave prices a firm undertone. Reports from the heart of the belt spoke of the need of rain in the near future.

"eOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher Kansas City’s other prodigy of the Marion Talley era has had a decidedly less meteoric rise than did the once-chubby coloratura, but he’s made it all the same. He is Izler Solomon, 29-year-old conductor, who tomorrow leads the NBC Orchestra in the first of two Sunday concerts. His debut performance is scheduled at 6 p. m.
tomorrow on NBC-Blue. Mr. Solomon was born in St. Paul,
the townsfolk, his musical talent |SC attracted about as much attention |P as Miss Talley’s, His progress was more obscure, however, and we don’t hear much more-about him until he turned up in 1936, as the conductor of the Illinois Symphony Orchestrs, Chicago’s WPA orchestra. He revised the orchestra’s personnel and concentrated his conductorial efforts upon contemporary works, especially those of American composers. The results were notable; someone called the WPA organization “Chicago’s spiciest highbrow musical institution.” * So now he gets his big chance with the summer survivors of Mr. Toscanini’s ensemble. For his prohas chosen a Bach chorale-prelude, “When We Are in Sore Distress,” orchestrated by Gordon. Campbell of Chicago; the “Capriol” . Suite by the Britisher, Peter Warlock, and Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. 2 ” Howard Barlow’s program tomorrow with the CBS Orchestra includes the “Froissart” Overture
brought him his first important notice, if not his first fame. The work was performed the Worcester Festival in 1890, but the heavy orchestration clashed
with the small hall, with a result ‘that the English composer had to
wait a few years before achieving his full stature in the public eye. ‘After this opening number, Mr, Barlow will turn to the “Haffner” Symphony in D Major, which Moz= art dashed off for the Haffner fam= ily .in the summer of 1782 and promptly forgot. And, as a con= cluding number, CBS-WFBM lis ‘| teners will hear Sibelius’ “Tapiola.” A Schumann collaboration of Robert, the composer, and Henrietta, the pianist, will feature tomor= row’s Radio City broadcast. Miss Schumann will appear with the Radio City String Quartet, but not, as one might suppose, in the Schu= mann Piano Quintet. Instead they wi play Godard’s arrangement of ann’s “Kinderscenen” for the and string combination. gh items in a promising program are the string players’ per formance of the Grieg G Minor Quartet and Frank Bridge's arrangements of “Cherry Ripe” and “Sally in Our Alley”; Miss Schumann’s collaboration in Men= delssohn’s D Minor Trio, and four songs by John Herrick, baritone of the popular Revelers ‘quartet. 2 = 2 .
The third broadcast in the Chaue tauqua Symphony series brings Mischa Mischakoff, NBC Symphony Orchestra concertmaster, to the microphone as soloist in the Lalo “Symphonie Espagnol.” Albert Stoessel will conduct, and the program (all-French) lists Berlioz’ “Roman Carnival” Overture; Debussy’s “Fetes,” and the second Daphnis and Chloe” Suite of Ravel, 2 2 s Charles O'Connell, who, like Mr, allel; conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra on occasion, will direct the \National Symphony Orchestra in tomorrow’s broadcast from- a barge on the Potomac River.
