League members will meet tonight|

© to map a course or action for secur- - ing “needed transportation facilities” in their neighborhood. The group is seeking installation of a feeder bus line to the Brook-

Patrons of the Ritter and Emerson bus lines have been invited to attend the meeting at 4400 E. 21st St. RB. Plans also will be discussed for financing a community house in the neighborhood, approved recently by the club’s executive committee. “LAW HELPLESS

T0 HALT DEATH

Ex-Doctor, Wounded" : by i Self, Refuses to Have Bullet Removed.

The law sat at the bedside today of a one-time physician, unable to interfere with his announced de-|ET termination to die of a self-inflict-ed bullet wound. But, strangely while the spirit of L. H. Cardwell, 55, was unwilling, the flesh continued to hold grimly on. Even an appeal to Attorney General Earl Warren for authority to operate against Mr. Cardwell’s wishes was denied. “The law is without power,” Mr. Warren ruled. “Medical aid cannot be administered without the pa-i& tient’s permission.” “I want to die,” Mr. Cardwell reiterated to doctors who wanted to remove a bullet lodged near his heart. They admitted that he probably would achieve his wish, but they hoped not. A graduate of a Chattanooga, Tenn., school of medicine, Mr. Card-

store here for years. Following a domestic dispute which caused him to leave his home and sleep in a rear room of his store, he shot himself yesterday morning. The bullet ranged through his stomach and lodged near the heart. A milk delivery man found him on his cot and called police. From his hospital bed he telephoned a friend, Arthur Duncan, to settle the|g business affairs and his store and lock its doors. “I want to die,” Mr. Cardwell told surgeons, who in desperation called District Attorney Roger Walsh of Kings County. Unable to find legal precedent for an enforced operation, Mr. Walsh appealed to the Attorney General in Los Angeles, only to receive an adverse ruling. Authorities have been unable to reach Mr. Cardwell’'s estranged
