Personnel of Industry Is
Scattered Throughout Other Branches.
By Science Service WASHINGTON, Aug. 3. — Ger-
many has completely abandoned “the construction of airships and the
famous factory at Friedrichshafen, |:
out of which came the Graf Zeppelin, the ill-starred Hindenburg and more than 100 other lighter-than-air craft, is being converted into a conventional airplane factory, it was learned here. Failure to obtain helium, the safe lifting gas of which the United States has a virtual monopoly, or to develop a non-inflammable form of hydrogen, is blamed for the abandonment of the giant ships. The Deutsche Zeppelin Rederei formed to operate commercial air routes using airships, has also been disbanded and its personnel scattered throughout other branches o industry. Termed ‘Death Blow’
The decision was seen in aeronautical circles here as possibly a “death blow” to the future of light-er-than-air craft. Germany and German technicians have been at least nine-tenths responsible for their development during the 40 years since Count Zeppelin first started experimenting with the cigar-shaped aerial vehicles. Followiiig the destruction of the Hindenburg when its hydrogen lifting gas ‘caught fire as it came in for a landing at Lakehurst, N. J., on the evening of May 17, 1937, the German Government had attempted to purchase helium. A law permitting its export, for non-military purposes only and subject to the approval of the Munitions Control Board, had been rushed through Congress. But sale of the gas has been consistently blocked by Secretary Ickes, a board member,
Helium Reports Weakened
Abandonment of airship construction indicated also that reports of discoveries of helium in Germany either are untrue or do not involve ’ enough helium to make airship operation possible ' independent of American supplies of the ‘gas. Destruction of the three largest -U. S.-built airships, the Navy's Shenandoah, Akron and Macon, almost has killed interest in them in the United States. A bill authorizing construction of a new lighter-than-air craft for the Navy was passed by Congress, but bids submitted under it were rejected by the Navy Department.
Senator John Bright Webb Et - a
State Senator John Bright Webb last night exchanged shots on his farm eight miles south of the City with a prowler he believes was going to poison some prize show sheep. Senator_Webb said he believes a blast from his shotgun wounded the prowler who yelled as if in pain and then -disappeared into a cornfield and escaped. - The Senator. was uninjured when the prowler answered a command to halt by whirling and firing a pistol. Senator Webb said he saw a car stop along his field at 10 o'clock last niight and saw a man get out of it. The car went on. The man crawied over a fence into a feeding lot, Sen-| ator Webb said, and walked rapidly, across it, headed for another -in which there were several show. sheep. Senator Webb. said he got his shotgun, went into the meadow and, | when he was within 60 feet of the prowler, ordered him to stop. The! man turned and fired, and then the!’
