Four police officers, with service rgcords. totaling more . than 100 _yéars, ‘have returned to private life following Safety Board approval of their retirement or resignation. Sergt. ‘William Dever, 70, has been retired after 37 years of police servigs, 25 of them as a sergeant. He joined the force in August, 1902, was in the traffic division for seven years and was assigned to humane society service in 1931. He lives at 203 E. 22d St. “as a humane society officer, Sergt. Dever cared ‘for many- destitute families and underprivileged children, supervising distribution of food dnd fuel and helping to pro‘vide’ medical care. He was injured seriously 11 years ago in a police

car crash, remaining in a hospital for four months.

Dever Intends to Rest

Merrill, resigned, ‘is 63, and was. appointed to the {force in 1906. He was assigned to {the humane [society in 1908, and {was named on the flood roll of {honor for his service in the 1913 ' flood. : - : + From sergeant in the humane society: service, Mr. Merrill was promoted to lieutenant in 1917, but ‘suffered a nervous breakdown and retired until 1921. Much of his later service was as a traffic officer iat Ohio and Meridian Sts. He was : appointed City Court bailiff in 1926. Mr. Merrill is active in lodge work and -is a Past Master of Prospect 1 Masonic Lodge. He lives at 1218 | Woodlawn Ave.

BUILDING BOUGHT BY SMITHER FIRM

3~W. A. Brennan, Inc, today anfounced sale of a two-story building at 420 S. Meridian St. by Henry - €: Smither IIT of New York City to ‘the Henry C. Smither Rdofing Corp. of Indianapolis. ¢ The property has a Meridian St. frontage of 35 feet and a depth of 135 feet. The building will be modernized by the new owners, according to Joseph E. Mattingly, roofing company president. Originally owned by Henry C. Bh hei I, the property passed to s heirs upon his death in 1930. ‘While Mr. Smither I founded the roofing company, the property was a separate possession and was not connected with the company. The roofing company which is no longer in the hands of the Smithers has been renting the building just purchased.

HOOSIERS WILL GET $739,000,000 IN LOANS
