‘Bow Tie Bronson Back for Another Fling as Fistic Dromolzr
By JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer
NEW YORK, Aug. 3—The old Bow Tie has gone back to promoting fights. The old Bow Tie is Jimmy Bronson. Not even the oldest settler can remember when they ever saw him without a bow tie. Legend has it that he was born wearing
one, but Mr. Bronson, astonishingly forthright, denies this. As he recalls 17, his neck needed washing.
stitutions of the town, rechristened it the Starlight B. C, and will be ready for operations in a month or so with what he promises will be an attractive line of truculent knuckling. It seems there were two Irishmen. One was named James R. Murphy and overnight he found the coliseum on his hands. Receivership or something. So Murphy, who is a distinguished sportsman, got hold of Bow Tie and said: “Let's put some fights in here and see
son’s Celtic alley. He was promoting fights before Joe Louis and some of the other Johnny-Come-Latelys were born. He started in Joplin, Mo., where he ran a club—the only one in the state, by the way—for 15 years, and he did all right. When Mr. Bronson wasn’t promoting he was managing and refereeing fights. One night he refereed a fight in wltich Jess Willard jumped out of the ring. Willard was fight-
Cox and himself, and stepped over the top rope. This incident convinced Mr. Bronson that you never can tell about fighters, particularly heavyweights. Willard went on to win the heavyweight championship of the world. Mr. Bronson could have bought his contract that night for a quarter but it looked like & bad investment. .When the war broke out Mr. Bronson joined up with the K. of C,,
matches, etc. We suppose ‘you could stretch a point and say he was the biggest matchmaker in the history of boxing. Certainly no ‘other matchmaker had as many men to choose from. Two million or so. And omt of these matches came Gene Tunney and Bab Martin. Mr. Bronson wound up managing Martin, who was a heavyweight, won the A. E. F. championship, as a matter of fact, and he was in Tunney’s corner the night the Marine
whistled “I didn’t raise my boy to be a soldier” all the time the old mauler was taping his hands. This was Mr. Bronson’s idea of psychology. It tied up with the slacker charges Dempsey had faced shortly after the war. The charges were unfair and Mr. Bronson knew
nettled that was his job. And it dig! get him nettled.
He could knock your brains out
it, but if he could get Dempsey
Martin wasn’t much of a fighter.
ae hé said he had a couple ot gas stations down in West Virginia and
was doing all right. . . . “And the last time I heard from him ‘he told me he had developed a left hand working the pumps, but I'm afraid ‘it's too late now.”
