Milliner Looks

Her ‘$100 Woman's Hat’ @ Thrilled Trade in 1907 |

made 8 hat for herself that had velvet ribbons clear to the bottom &=

There were a couple of days, back in August, 1907, when: the good ladies of Abingdon, Ill, wondered if the heat hadn’t gone to Miss Idabel Magill’s head. For Miss Magill had

announced, with a perfectly straight face, that a $100 hat would be a feature of her millinery. shop’s fall display. Miss Magill, who now is retired and lives at 1238 Parker Ave., still thinks it was a pretty good piece of promotion. The hat, you see, was trimmed with 160 $1 hills. It was a great drawing card, she recalls, and her first fall customers helped her along with the joke. All they told their friends was “Yes, Miss Magill really has a $100 hat.” Then they let the friends come around and see for themselves. Once there, of course, Miss Magill could put her salesmanship to work.

. Hat Kept in Bank

Just for safekeeping, Miss Magill: put her hat in the bank every night|-

until she restored the trimmings to circulation. The hat was modeled on a frame from Fahnley & McCrea in Indianapolis. Miss Magill used to come over here every year to buy the chassis and trimmings for her new creations. She would go home loaded down with velvet flowers and ribbons, feathers and birds of paradise, or maybe leghorns and panamas, laces and chiffons. It all depended on the season. Later Miss Magill did her buying in Chicago,” which was nearer. But she always liked Indianapolis hats. She used to fancy that she could tell a hat from Fahnley & MzCrea, or Gage’s in Chicago, no matter who had trimmed them. Nowadays it isn’t so easy. Women don’t care if their hats look like everyone else's, she says. What's more, she couldn't bear to sell cheap hats. That is why she retired in 1933, after more than 30 years in her Abingdon store.

Liked ‘$100’ Chapeaus Miss Magill always liked hats the

size of her $100 creation. She liked them with ribbons, too. Once she

of her dress. Generally speaking, she thinks women, whatever the styles, should pick hats to suit their individuality.

Naturally, when small hats were |

in style she made them.

“I have some pictures of these §

hats at home, and they're freaks.

But because I made them and wore

them, I guess I don't think they're quite as silly as some of the pres-! ent-day ones. “I have seen some hats on the
