‘My Soul Belongs to Cornell,’ Says Larry Fletcher, Hoosier
Olivier’s Understudy Ready to Leave N. Y. Stages For Summer at Nantucket.
By HELEN WORDEN Times Special Writer EW YORK, Aug. 1.—“She is undoubtedly the most gracious person I know,” Lawrence Fletcher said of America’s “first lady of the Bis spa. ” Katharine Cornell, as: he tucked one leg up on the sofa of is apartment at the Schuyler at 57 W. 45th St. And he should know, for this former. Indianapolis resident has gone through many a rehearsal in his Sapaeity as understudy for Law-
rence Olivier in Miss Cornell's current success, “No Time for Comedy.” Previously he toured with’ Miss Cornell in the Middle West in “Herod and Mariamne.’ Now that Francis Lederer has taken over Olivier’s part opposite Katharine Cornell, Mr. Fletcher, dark and well built, plans to desert his backstage haunts at the Ethel Barrymore theater for the barnstorming of the Nantucket Players, on Nantucket Island, Mass., the middle of August. He owns a part interest in the stock company and had expected to leave early this summer, but resigned himself to staying in New York when Miss Cornell * and © Guthrie McClintic, the director, persuaded him to understudy. “My heart’s in Nantucket,” he said laughing, “but my soul belongs to Cornell.” : J ” ” AWRENCE FLETCHER, who has succeeded in crashing the glittering gates of Broadway, grew up in Indianapolis. His mother, Mrs. Walter L. Howe, lives at 5724 Winthrop Ave., and his sister, Mrs. Henry D. Ridgely, 1321 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, recently visited him in New York.
“She ran me ragged!” Mr. Fletcher exclaimed, looking exhausted at |
the. mention of his sister. “The ~ Stork Club, 21 €lub, shows, the World’s Fair, and'even the parachute jump! I've never done so
many things all at once in my
life. » Mr. Fletcher got his first acting training with the Indianapolis Little Theater, whose head, George Somnes, was stage director for the Stuart Walker stock company in the summers. George Somnes brought young Fletcher to the at-
tention of Stuart Walker, who gave -¢
him his first professional acting job
Larry, as hes known to his friends, can’t remember when he came to New York. He just migrated he says. Since he's been East he has toured and visited in Indiana several times. Indianapolis theater goers will remember, him as Larry Toms, “the Hoot Mix from the Rio Grande,” in “Boy Meets Girl.” He also played in “Anthony and Cldopatra” wheh it toured Indiana. More recently he was “Julius Caesar” in Orson Welles’ production that played on the road. 2 ” ”

couple of plays he’s written. Around meal time, if he decides to eat out, you're likely to find him at Stouffer's on Fifth Ave, or at Ralph's on 45th just off Broadway. Ralph has helped many an unemployed actor and they in turn, patronize his place when they're working. It has lots of atmosphere with red check table cloths, sawdust, Italian food and plenty of good whisky. Ralph’s customers have a softball team known as “The At Liberty Nine.” As soon as an actor gets a job he’s automatically off the team since he’s no longer at liberty. _ Larry was center field two years ago. They played the boys from the show, “Shadow ane Substance,” one’ Friday in Central Park, and there was much “substance” in these “shadows,” for they beat the tar out of “The At Liberty Niners.” Larry called it an ignominous defeat.
Next fall, Larry hopes to get in on one of the three plays Kathne Cornell is contemplating.

In Paris Showings
Because of their adaptability to the current Victorian fashion trend, ntiff silks are extensively seen in pre-fall Paris showings. Patou uses white moire to create a stunning, tailleur with brown ilk velvet collar and brown chiffon blouse. A brown velvet beret is selected to go with this suit. For formal evening wear, Balenciaga
shows a dignified gown of mauve
faille with a tiny gold pin dot. The skirt is narrow with a fashionable low bustle drape; the bodice plain, high-necked. Purple silk velvet evening bag and gloves complete the ensemble.

Hot Sunshine Called ~ Enemy of Blankets
Moderately warm water, very bland suds, plenty of clear rinse the same temperature as the suds bath, gentle handling and a good drying day is all that is essential to successfully launder wool blankets at home. If you live in a section where the water is naturally hard, better use a reliable water softener. A blanket that is very soiled is better for a second suds bath, and bindings may need a gentle goingover with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and hang evenly in the shade
to dry. Remember that very hot sunshine and cold temperatures do not treat wool fibers kindly. If the nap appears to be flattened a bit after the blanket is dry, brush it up carefully with a soft brush.
